Special Education Paraprofessional - Enhanced (Level
3)

Job Goal:
To assist certified special education personnel in providing instructional, behavioral, communication, social-emotional, personal care, and support to students with disabilities to help students access the educational environment and make progress toward IEP goals. The paraprofessional will work under the supervision of certified staff to support students across instructional and non-instructional settings while maintaining student dignity, confidentiality, and safety.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree, completion of two years of college coursework, or successful completion of required paraprofessional assessment preferred.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama Substitute License.
  • Ability to be trained and certified annually in the system's adopted approach to student crisis management.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow teacher-directed instructional and behavioral plans.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students and school matters.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assist students with academic, behavioral, communication, social, adaptive, and functional/physical needs.
  • Ability to physically assist students as needed, including lifting, positioning, mobility assistance, toileting, feeding, and playground supervision when required.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during behavioral or medical situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, therapists, administrators, and other staff.
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to meet suitability requirements under the Alabama Child Protection Act and Board policy.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and Director of Special Education may require.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructional Support
  • Assist certified staff in implementing IEP goals, accommodations, modifications, and behavior intervention plans.
  • Provide individual and small-group instructional support under teacher supervision.
  • Reinforce academic skills and classroom routines taught by certified personnel.
  • Assist students in completing classroom assignments, assessments, and functional tasks.
  • Support student participation in inclusion and general education settings as assigned.
  • Prepare instructional materials, visual supports, communication tools, and classroom resources.
  • Collect and record student performance data as directed.
  • Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support
  • Implement behavior intervention strategies and reinforcement systems as directed by certified staff.
  • Assist students with transitions, self-regulation, communication, and social interaction skills.
  • Monitor student behavior and maintain a safe and structured learning environment.
  • Respond appropriately to student behavioral crises according to district training and procedures.
  • Provide supervision during classroom, hallway, cafeteria, restroom, bus, recess, community-based instruction, and transition activities.
  • Personal Care and Functional Support
  • Assist students with toileting, hygiene, feeding, dressing, mobility, positioning, and other daily living activities.
  • Assist with lifting, transferring, or positioning students in accordance with training and safety procedures.
  • Support students with medical, physical, sensory, or communication needs under staff direction.
  • Maintain awareness of student health plans, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with staff following district guidelines for communication.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development activities as required.
  • Follow Board policies, school procedures, and directions from supervising staff.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, flexibility, and appropriate workplace conduct.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, principal, or Special Education Director.
  • Terms of Employment:
    Nine-month position in accordance with Board-approved salary schedule and personnel policies.

    Evaluation:
    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy and established procedures for support personnel.
