Job SummaryHeavy Equipment Operator (HEO) at the Fort Rucker Gunnery Range Complex. Operates heavy machinery such as cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, bulldozers, and industrial tractors to excavate, load, and move materials. Reads grade and slope stakes, simple plans, and performs maintenance and repairs on equipment.
Responsibilities- Perform erosion control maintenance as directed by the Crew Chief and Supervisor.
- Perform operator-level maintenance on dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, farm tractors and other equipment.
- Operate equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, forklifts, dozers, and farm tractors with attachments.
- Read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans.
- Grease, adjust, and perform emergency repairs on equipment.
- Maintain and repair equipment and buildings including painting, masonry, and electrical under guidance.
- Fuel vehicles, maintain vehicle records, and drive pickup trucks to obtain supplies and parts.
- Assist Range Technicians with maintenance tasks when required.
- Typical hours 0530 to 1400 Monday‑Friday with possible rotating shifts.
- Work conducted outdoors; temperature variations apply.
- Physical requirements:
30% standing, 30% walking, 15% climbing in/out of vehicles, 5% stooping, 10% reaching, 10% lifting. - Must lift up to 35 lbs. alone and more with assistance.
- High School diploma or equivalent (required).
- Experience in erosion control and grounds construction (plus).
- Electrical and/or vehicle maintenance experience (plus).
- Class A CDL (required).
- Haz Mat endorsement preferred, obtainable within six months of hire.
- Experience operating 100HP+ farm tractors, Skid Steer, Backhoe, Front Loader, and Dump Trucks 10‑wheel or larger (required).
- Dozer, Excavator and Motor Grader operations experience preferred.
- Ability to understand verbal or written direction and work independently or in a team.
- Current Alabama Driver’s License required; must be insured under company’s vehicle insurance policy while operating vehicles.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Background screening including SSN, driver record, and criminal investigation.
