JOB SUMMARY

This position will be responsible for year-round children's library programs and activities relating to them. Under general guidance assesses, selects, processes, and catalogs library materials suitable for children. Provides reference services to children and teachers. Also responsible for checking in and out materials in the Children's Library when on duty. Will have heavy public contact working with children and their parents.

Handles technical work involving the circulation desk in the Children's area.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provide excellent customer service to ensure the highest quality of service as established by the City of Page.
  • Develops and conducts programs for children, caregivers, and parents which encourage reading, viewing and listening skills, and the use of library facilities and materials.
  • Plans and organizes work according to season of year, special events, and regular library schedule.
  • Administers annual summer reading program for children.
  • Prepares and delivers a regular series of story hours for: pre-school age children: infants and their parents/caregivers.
  • Organizes and gives tours of the library and its services to all students and groups of young library users.
  • Serves as primary children's services reference librarian: provides assistance to the public with reader's advisory services and assists patrons in using the online catalog and other electronic tools and resources; assists and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment, and facilities.
  • Selects materials for acquisition and withdrawal from the children's print and non-print collections; supervises the organization, maintenance, preservation, withdrawal, and disposal of materials.
  • Reads standard professional reviewing media to identify items that are age appropriate, e.g. Publisher's Weekly, Book List, Library Journal, etc.
  • Catalogs and processes children's books and items.
  • Partners with other community agencies and non-profits to promote the library, e.g. Attend community meetings; set up booths promoting children's services at different community activities.
  • Creates bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting Children's Department collections, services, and programs.
  • Provides reference service to children and teachers.
  • Creates displays to enhance the library collection, attracts young readers and promotes reading.
  • Prepares reading lists for school and community distribution.
  • Trains and supervises staff and volunteers assigned to the Children's Department; makes job assignments and verifies that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Attends workshops, seminars, and other educational & professional meetings to acquire new skills.
  • Contributes to the library's long and short range plans concerning the use of new trends and technologies and making recommendations as applicable.
  • Assists in monitoring the behavior and conduct of library patrons. Communicates and interprets Page Public Library's policies and procedures to staff and the public.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Answers the phone as needed; works at the circulation desk when assigned.
  • Checks in/out library materials and shelves materials.
  • Keeps work area and children's department neat and clean. Cleans up room after program is finished.
  • Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports for the Library Manager.
