Position: Supervisory Park Ranger (P)

Deputy Chief Ranger

This position serves as the Deputy Chief Ranger for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Rainbow Bridge National Monument. This position reports directly to and is supervised by the Chief Ranger of Glen Canyon NRA. As the Deputy Chief Ranger-South the incumbent assists in managing one of the largest, complex and diverse Visitor and Resource Protection programs in the National Park Service (NPS).

With 1.25 million acres, Glen Canyon NRA includes the second largest manmade lake in the United States. The park contains 1,960 miles of shoreline, 98 canyons, 6 major developed areas with concession operations, 217 NPS buildings, 6 auto campgrounds (552 spaces), 4 lakeside primitive campground with 700+ sites, 1,828 boat slips/buoys, 407 rental houseboats, and 2,260 boats in dry storage.

The park has 6 entrance stations and collects over $2.3 million from over 4.2 million visitors. Glen Canyon has the highest overnight stay of any park in the system. Glen Canyon is located in two states (UT and AZ) with 5 counties. Glen Canyon is an area of proprietary jurisdiction with management and operational issues impacting many outside local, state, tribal and county governments.

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as the Southern districts principal advisor to the Chief Ranger and/or Superintendent on all aspects of Ranger Activities and Resource Protection.
  • Responsible for leading all law enforcement and emergency operations in the Southern Districts of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, including incident management, search and rescue, resource and fire protection, public safety, and the development and enforcement of park regulations.
  • Ensures that all supervisory and personnel management responsibilities are carried out in the southern districts, including the recruitment, selection, training, counseling, and evaluation of permanent and seasonal employees.
  • Directly prepares recommendations for planning, programming, and distribution of the Division budget of $3.7 million.
  • Drafts policy statements and long range objectives for visitor and resource protection and general management of the park.
