Summary
This supervisory position is located at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division.
Major Duties- Serves as the Southern district's principal advisor to the Chief Ranger and/or Superintendent on all aspects of Ranger Activities and Resource Protection.
- Responsible for leading all law enforcement and emergency operations in the Southern Districts of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, including incident management, search and rescue, resource and fire protection, public safety, and the development and enforcement of park regulations.
- Ensures that all supervisory and personnel management responsibilities are carried out in the southern districts, including the recruitment, selection, training, counseling, and evaluation of permanent and seasonal employees.
- Directly prepares recommendations for the planning, programming, and distribution of the Division budget of $3.7 million.
- Drafts policy statements and long‑range objectives for visitor and resource protection and general management of the park.
Law Enforcement Commission:
Must currently possess or previously hold (within the past three years) a FLETC‑issued Land Management Police Training (LMPT), full Type I Law Enforcement Commission or equivalent; or be qualified to receive a Type I Commission upon appointment by 07/27/2026. There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement.
U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Subject to pre‑employment physical and drug testing. Must possess a Type I Law Enforcement Commission. New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay within 30 days of entrance on duty. Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non‑temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time‑in‑grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service).
Time‑in‑grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Time‑in‑grade requirements also apply to former Federal civilian employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Selectee(s) will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency. Selectee(s) must be free of any domestic violence convictions.
Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment. Upon appointment selectee will have one year to show documentation of qualification of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or initiate the process to become qualified.
Demands
Duties and responsibilities require long workdays and extensive travel. Ability to work outdoors for long periods of time in hot, dry, desert temperatures which range up to 115 °F in the summer and in cold snowy conditions which may reach 0 °F in the winter. Must have the ability to respond, in an alert manner, to emergency situations which can occur at any time of the day or night.
Must be capable of arduous hiking up to 12 miles in a day over steep, rocky, canyon terrain which ranges in altitude from 3,500 to 10,000 feet…
