Nature of Work

Under limited supervision performs security work of routine difficulty in the supervision, care and welfare of inmates detained in the jail facility; performs related work as assigned.

This position requires you to work 12-hour shifts. This position may require on-call duty.

• Maintain the safety and physical security of the jail facility
• Respond to and manage emergency or crisis situations, using communication skills to resolve volatile situations
• Respond to and manage life-threatening, potential life-threatening and hazardous situations
• Manage housing units of up to 144 occupants
• Control, supervise and document the movement and activities of inmates
• Conduct inspections, searches (including pat-downs and strip searches) and security checks of inmate housing areas
• Administer first aid including exposure to blood and bio-hazardous materials
• Maintain detention records
• Perform routine receptionist and clerical duties
• Work with detention statistics and computer data
• Supervise the activities of visitors, support personnel and program volunteers
• Conduct inventories of detention supplies and commodities
• Distribute and collect all incoming and outgoing mail
• Assist in securing firearms and ammunition in the gun locker
• Conduct manual and automated criminal history checks
• Examine and interpret court orders and release documents to determine correct court, housing needs and releases
• Appear in court and/or hearings as a witness
• Assist with the jail facility's level of cleanliness per standards

• Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien.
• Must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment to the position.
• Must reside within Coconino County upon appointment to the position.
• Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D.

• Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license upon appointment and maintain it throughout employment.
• Must successfully pass a written examination, interview board and physical agility test.
• Must successfully complete a background check, polygraph examination, medical examination and drug test prior to employment.
• Must not have a felony conviction within the last ten years or a dishonorable discharge from the military.
• Must not have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence within the previous five years.
• Must not have used marijuana within twelve months of hire or dangerous/narcotic drugs in the past five years for more than experimentation.
• Must successfully complete a minimum of 240 hours of correctional training within twelve months of employment.

• Maintain a neutral attitude toward all inmates regardless of the reason for their detention
• Respond to emergencies or stressful situations calmly, quickly and decisively
• Work rotating shifts
• Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
• Follow written and verbal instructions
• Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
