Role

Leverndale/Dykebar Hospital requires Mechanical Maintenance Technicians to join the Estates team to carry out reactive and planned preventative maintenance across the hospital campus.

Candidates must be a time‑served mechanical engineer, qualified to HNC level (or currently working towards this qualification), with post‑apprenticeship experience.

The primary role is to carry out mechanical tasks, but you will be part of a multi‑skilled technical team and will be responsible for specialist technical services in building‑services disciplines, including AC systems, hot water systems, ventilation equipment, pressure systems, medical gas systems. The post holder must accept a wide range of cross‑trade duties to deliver a high standard of service.

The successful applicant will also assist with training and education of apprentices and adult trainees, ensuring they gain the necessary training and experience for their programme. This will involve work with managers to identify and set up training programmes.

  • Day shift pattern throughout Monday to Friday
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment for clinical care.
  • Use acquired skills and abilities to find and expedite the best solution for desired outcomes.
  • Install and commission machinery in compliance with health and safety and statutory regulations.
  • Interpret detailed manufacturers' installation manuals, specifications, technical data, wiring diagrams and schematic drawings for building‑services systems, plant and equipment.
  • Complete Planned Preventative Maintenance according to organisational and manufacturer recommendations, using appropriate tools, test equipment and record details of work carried out.
  • Respond to breakdowns, evaluate the situation and take corrective action to minimise disruption and damage.
  • Use the Building Management System (BMS) computer to set parameters and record data on a wide range of building services to maintain environmental conditions and provide early warning of service faults.
  • Fault‑find and analyse within complex control systems and equipment to minimise future breakdowns and keep the hospital running efficiently.
  • Inspect, test and verify fixed wiring systems within healthcare facilities, in statutory compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) and with the current Guidance Note 3‑BS 7671 17th Edition Wiring Regulations, utilising calibrated test equipment to maintain a safe working environment.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
  • Served a recognised apprenticeship in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or Plumbing (equivalent to SVQ Level 4, Higher National Diploma, Modern Apprenticeship Level 4, or Professional Development Awards SCQF – 8‑9).
  • Knowledge of procedures for mechanical and gas maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, BTEC/HNC Level or City and Guilds plus relevant post‑apprenticeship training or equivalent experience.
  • Attend training courses required by Estates Management and NHS policies, procedures, and undergo specialised training in systems and equipment to maintain CPD of competency under revised regulations.
  • Low Voltage SHTM 06‑02 (one week training and certification, revalidation every three years) plus BS 7671 IEE wiring regulations.
  • Mandatory first aid duties for work with electricity, to the level of competence required for safe code of practice.
