Job Description – District Sign Technician II or III – Palestine (2601229)

ResponsibilitiesDistrict Sign Technician II:
Performs skilled transportation-related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Duties include managing inventory and records, ordering signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
District Sign Technician III:
Performs highly skilled transportation-related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Includes independent work on assignments, with unusual issues referred to the supervisor.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Ordering signs from the regional sign shop.
- Conducting nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retro reflective pavement markers.
- Inspecting roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommending repairs.
- Maintaining expense records and inventory of materials, supplies and equipment.
- Mixing and placing concrete for sign support foundations; moving cement bags and related items.
- Operating a boom and bucket truck or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs.
- Performing preventive maintenance on sign truck.
- Repairing and installing signs, supports, foundations, and delineators in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance.
- Other job responsibilities as assigned.
- May assist in scheduling and assigning work; serve as a work crew project lead; train other technicians; assist maintenance crews; respond to emergency situations; maintain expense records; calculate material amounts; order supplies from district shop.
Experience:
- District Sign Tech II: 1 year sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
- District Sign Tech III: 2 years in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part‑time equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications- Valid driver’s license at time of application. (Position requires driving a state vehicle.)
- Must have a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one within 120 calendar days from the date of employment.
- Commercial Driver’s License at time of application.
- Considerable knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Traffic Control Standard Sheets, the Guide to Proper Location and Installation of Signs and Other Devices, using basic mathematical fundamentals, installing and repairing signs, preparing and maintaining confidential records, and using computers and applicable programs.
- Ability to work in cramped spaces, at varied heights, and in outdoor environmental conditions.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; extreme cold and heat (below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour).
- Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, or other device).
- Medium work:
Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. - Climbing (ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps).
- Balancing, walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
- Stooping, bending, kneeling, walking long distances.
- Visual acuity required to operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.
