Minimum Training & Experience

May be eligible for sign-on bonus based on license held:

  • Level 1 - up to $4,000
  • Level 2 - up to $3,000
  • Level 3 - up to $2,000

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Coursework in water and/or wastewater technologies preferred. Some experience in general construction or other manual labor-intensive experience preferred. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Special requirements:

  • Must complete Trenching and Shoring and Confine Space entry courses within one (1) year of hire.
  • When assigned to Water Distribution:
    Must obtain a Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Water Distribution System Operators Class III License within two (2) years of hire.
  • When assigned to Wastewater Collections:
    Requires a Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association (FWPCOA) Wastewater Collection System Operator Technician Level III Certification within two (2) years of hire. Completion of the California State University Sacramento (CSUS) Operation and Maintenance of Wastewater Collection Systems, Volume 1, 90-hour course will also be accepted.

Licenses/Certifications must be kept current while in this classification.

Must be able to use hand tools, read simple blueprints and schematics. Must have knowledge of computer systems and the ability to utilize technology such as tablets and desktop computers to complete various trainings and tasks as assigned. Florida Class A Commercial Driver's License with tank endorsement preferred. Hands-on experience with water distribution and or wastewater collection systems, pipe fitting, irrigation installation, pumps and motors, and operating and maintaining light and heavy equipment preferred.

Note:

Employees in this position may progress to Utilities Technician II, III or IV after meeting all the minimum requirements and consistent satisfactory performance of their duties.

Emergency Declaration Status

Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared emergency and/or declared emergency. On an incident-by-incident basis, the employee's Department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.

General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, working in teams, may perform work installing, repairing and replacing water and sewer lines and associated fixtures and appurtenances. Work involves assisting with installing water and sewer lines, mains, valves, hydrants, manholes, air release valves and meters; and maintaining and repairing such fixtures. The employee is also responsible for assisting with inspecting water and sewer lines, including searching for leaks and measuring flow;

and locating lines and fixtures for contractors, other City departments, etc. May be required to work on holidays and weekends. Employee is required to use tact and courtesy when dealing with the citizens and employees. Employee must exercise some independent judgment and initiative in ensuring proper completion of work assignments. Reports to assigned Supervisor.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Essential job functions:

  • Locates, repairs, installs and maintains water and sewer mains, service lines and utility related appurtenances such as, fire hydrants, water meters, valves, pumps, air release/vacuum valves, lift stations, wells and sanity sewer manholes.
  • Prepares work areas and secures job sites by setting up cones, barricades, and other traffic control devices.
  • Restores utility easements and public right of way, which includes but is not limited to cleaning, repairing, and replacing sidewalks, curbs, driveways, and landscaping.
  • Issues public notices, such as, precautionary boil water, smoke testing, planned service interruption door hangers.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and tools for various work as assigned.
  • Operates equipment within skillset as assigned by Foreman.
  • As directed, collects water and/or wastewater samples for various analyses.
