Salary Range: $24.24 to $30.94.
Expected hiring range: $24.24 to $26.73.

The City of Palmdale is seeking a motivated, team-oriented individual to join the South Antelope Valley Emergency Services (SAVES) team as a part-time SAVES Assistant. This unique position combines administrative support and hands‑on labor to contribute to the seamless functioning of the SAVES food bank and programming.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This entry‑level class of the series is distinguished from higher levels by routine and repetitive duties performed according to established procedures. Incumbents are closely supervised in their initial assignments. As they gain experience, incumbents will work more independently in routine work.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in providing services related to the SAVES program including providing clients access to food, transportation and shelter.
  • Perform client related activities including receiving and storing food, assisting the public in applying for program services and distributing food to qualified participants.
  • Screen and qualify clients for food and shelter vouchers; refer clients to other agencies as appropriate for other services.
  • Perform administrative and clerical duties related to program activities including typing, filing, maintaining records and files, and answering phones.
  • Compile and tabulate a variety of statistical records of activities; prepare routine statistical reports.
  • Clean and maintain the physical area containing food and supplies; assist in unloading food and supplies from delivery vehicles.
  • Maintain food inventory on computer.
  • Supervise program operations in absence of SAVES Coordinator.
  • Assign work to volunteers as necessary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles and practices of social service programs.
  • Modern office practices, methods, procedures and computer equipment.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Principles and practices of assigning work to volunteers.

Ability to:

  • Learn about community organizations and resources available to those in need of emergency services.
  • Physically move and lift food and supplies related to the program.
  • Assign and review the work of volunteers.
  • Learn and apply pertinent City and program policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain basic program statistics and records, prepare routine reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Experience and Education

Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • One year of social service experience including clerical duties is preferred.
  • Experience working / volunteering in a food bank environment is preferred.

Education: High school diploma or G.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver's license by time of appointment is required.

Working Conditions
  • Mobility: frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting for long periods of time; regular climbing, reaching, bending and squatting.
  • Lifting: frequently up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent reading and close‑up work; occasional color and depth vision.
  • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; frequent grasping, holding, and reaching.
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the phone.
  • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision‑making and concentration; frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasional working alone.
  • Environmental: frequent exposure to noise.

Work is performed in a typical temperature‑controlled office environment subject to typical office noise and environment. This position will also work in a warehouse environment and outdoors on a regular basis, with exposure to extreme weather. The SAVES program operates 7 days a week. The regular work schedule includes one weekend day per week. Positions will be required to work holidays and some evenings as well.

Positions may require occasional overtime and travel is rare.
