Position: SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT I

Position Description

Assist in special education programs, including preparing teaching materials, supervising students, and meeting the special education needs of students.

Duties
  • Assist the special education teacher in conducting lessons and classroom activities; help prepare and manage classroom projects.
  • Work with individual or small groups to develop academic skills; drill students in reading, spelling, math, and other subjects.
  • Observe students, answer questions, provide individualized instruction, counsel, and calm students as needed.
  • Assist in behavior modification programs, including charting, time‑out supervision, and self‑defense; help maintain classroom control.
  • Supervise students during playground activities, bus loading/unloading, outings, and other activities.
  • Help prepare instructional and testing materials; administer and score tests; correct papers; assist in producing graphic and written teaching materials.
  • Assist in assessing programs and materials to meet student needs; collect, assemble, and distribute textbooks, learning packages, supplies, equipment, and other resources; help order instructional materials and aids when necessary.
  • Perform routine duties such as recording grades, taking attendance, maintaining attendance records, and completing forms and applications as needed.
  • Maintain a neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment, including preparing bulletin board materials and decorating the classroom.
  • Attend faculty, staff, in‑service, and parent conferences and meetings as required.
  • Set up and operate audio‑visual equipment, computers, copying machines, and other related equipment to support instruction.
  • Perform general clerical duties.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Experience:

      Some instructional assistant experience is desirable.
    • Education/Training:
      Formal or informal education or training ensuring the ability to read and write at a level necessary for job performance.
    • Academic Proficiency:
      Applicants must meet proficiency in one of the following: completed 48 or more college units; received an AA degree or higher; or successfully completed the academic proficiency exam (reading, language arts, math).
    • Licenses/Certifications:

      Possession of or ability to obtain a current American Red Cross First Aid Certificate (desirable); possession of or ability to obtain a current CPR Certificate (desirable).
    Proof of Education

    Foreign equivalency certification is required for individuals whose high school or college coursework was completed outside the United States.

    Work Schedule

    Part‑time, 5.75 hours per day, following the student calendar. Additional hours may be available based on seniority and position availability.

    Salary

    Initial salary at the first step of the applicable salary schedule. Probationary period is 130 work days. After becoming permanent, a one‑step advance is granted, with annual increases up to the fifth step of the salary schedule.

    Benefits

    Seventeen paid holidays; sick leave proportionate to hours worked; vacation earned at the prescribed rate, vesting after completion of the probationary period.

    Working Conditions

    Indoor/outdoor environment with temperature swings. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens, noise from classrooms and office equipment, and other classroom and outdoor environments.

    Physical Demands

    20‑lb. lifting/carrying requirement; some sitting, walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and reaching are required.
