Nuclear Hardening and Survivability Engineer – Level 5 for the Aeronautics team responsible for ensuring aircraft avionics and mission systems remain operable in hostile nuclear environments.
What You Will Be DoingProviding deep technical leadership on the design, analysis, testing, and certification of avionics and mission systems that must survive HEMP, ionizing radiation, thermal flash, radiation, blast, gust, and over‑pressure events.
Responsibilities- Developing and validating hardening strategies and survivability metrics that meet U.S. military nuclear survivability standards.
- Leading system‑engineering integration and test activities for the NH&S program plans, including derivation of hardening requirements.
- Conducting analysis, testing, and certification of avionics and mission systems to demonstrate compliance with nuclear‑environment specifications.
- Coordinating with cross‑functional teams to ensure requirements verification and validation throughout the product lifecycle.
- Providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and analysts working on nuclear hardening initiatives.

Further Information About This OpportunityU.S. citizenship is required. The position requires an active Secret clearance at the start and the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance. The role is located in Palmdale, CA.
Work LocationThe position is onsite full‑time at a designated Lockheed Martin facility in Palmdale, CA.
Work SchedulesSupports a variety of alternate work schedules. Current schedule: 4×10 hour day, 3 days off per week.
Basic Qualifications- Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline or equivalent experience.
- Experience leading teams that perform analysis, evaluation, and validation of components, equipment, subsystems, or weapon‑system models in nuclear threat environments.
- Experience with nuclear‑hardened aircraft designs and/or methodologies.
- Practical experience with Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and digital tool ecosystems, including 3
DEXPERIENCE, CATIA, and HEMP Modeling & Simulation. - Familiarity with specialized facilities and instrumentation required for testing across nuclear hardening, blast, thermal, and electromagnetic environments.
- Ability to advise and ensure compliance with applicable FAA Airworthiness standards in conjunction with relevant military specifications and guidelines.
- Experience with Earned Value Management System tools and concepts.
This position requires a government security clearance; candidates must be U.S. citizens.
Pay RateAnnual base salary range: $128,400 - $226,435 for most states (excluding major metropolitan areas) and $147,700 - $255,990 for major metropolitan areas in California, Massachusetts, and New York. This position is incentive plan eligible.
