Summary

You will serve as the Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, Institutional Safety Branch. The Branch enhances mission success by providing independent analysis through audits, surveillance and inspections of AFRC facilities, equipment and operations. Ensures Federal OSHA compliance is understood and accomplished for the Center, and the safety of personnel, facilities, equipment and unique fleet of aircraft.

Ensures Federal OSHA compliance is understood and accomplished for the Center, and the safety of personnel, facilities, equipment and unique fleet of aircraft.

Duties
  • Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Monitors and evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of Institutional Safety and Health programs.
  • Reviews program documentation, records, and performance data; conducts tabletop exercises, field assessments, and on-site inspections to verify compliance and identify potential hazards or deficiencies.
  • Investigates and analyzes adverse safety and health trends, recurring deficiencies, incidents, and unsafe conditions.
  • Recommends and initiates corrective and preventive actions, tracks resolution, and verifies the effectiveness of corrective measures.
  • Provides guidance to personnel and management on safety requirements, risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Provides safety oversight for facility construction, general industry hazardous operations, equipment, aircraft maintenance, and flight test activities.
  • Establishes, implements, and oversees the Center’s occupational safety and health programs, applying sound management principles to develop, enforce, and sustain safety and health standards.
  • Monitors, reviews and inspects documents and facilities for safety compliance and regulations.
  • Inspects the work area to identify and eliminate unsafe and unhealthful environmental conditions and to determine compliance with Federal and State safety and occupational health standards.

  • This position may require a one-year probationary/trial period. If selected, the requirement to serve such period will be determined by Title 5 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 11.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-12

You must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level:

  • Administering and evaluating safety and occupational health programs;
  • Providing employee training and safety education; conducting workplace inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with Federal and State standards;
  • Evaluating work processes and equipment for potential accidents; and recommending effective risk-control measures.
To qualify for GS-13
