Position Overview
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is recruiting for an Accountant 3 in Palmer.
Responsibilities- Oversees operating and capital budgets and monitors expenditures for compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Supervises a team of three accounting technicians, ensuring work aligns with protocols and cost tracking for in‑state fires.
- Manages the crossbill process, coordinating between agencies for timely and accurate wildland fire billing.
- Updates policies and procedures, researches industry standards, and implements improvements to enhance financial efficiency.
- Communicates with interagency partners, participates in cost committees, and represents the Division in cost management discussions.
- Prepares financial reports, reconciles accounts, and provides forecasts to support strategic decision‑making.
- Cost Accounting: knowledge of cost accounting principles, methods, and allocation.
- Auditing: understanding of GAAS and program audit procedures.
- Control of Funds: knowledge of responsibilities for appropriations and fund accounts.

- Analysis and Assessment: use of information technology for collecting and analyzing data.
- Analytical Thinking / Problem Solving: systematic approach to address problems.
- Oral and Written Communication: effective expressive communication, listening skills.
- Principles of Accounting: knowledge of GAAP, double-entry, full accounting cycle.
- Technical Competence: application of acquired knowledge and advising others on technical issues.
