Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: ANSEP Acceleration Academy Program Assistant (Temporary)- Nome

At ANSEP, we are dedicated to transforming education and career pathways for all students, with a special focus on supporting Indigenous Alaska students. Our mission is to increase representation of Indigenous people in STEM and other high‑demand fields through a model that begins in middle school and continues through graduate school and into the workforce. Working at ANSEP means joining a team committed to excellence and opportunity – where we empower students to achieve their full potential and create lasting change for Alaska and beyond.

Our ANSEP Acceleration Academy is a dual enrollment program that supports 9th‑12th grade students who are working to earn college credits before they graduate from high school. This position is based at our newly launched Nome campus.

Are you passionate about fostering student success and contributing to a dynamic educational environment? Join the ANSEP (Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program) team as a Program Assistant and play a crucial role in empowering the next generation. This temporary position is ideal for an individual who excels in a structured setting, enjoys direct student interaction, and is committed to promoting a safe and effective learning atmosphere.

The Program Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting ANSEP's mission by directly assisting students and contributing to the smooth operation of program activities. This position involves direct student supervision, academic support, logistical coordination, and ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment. Program Assistants are integral to fostering student success and achieving ANSEP's overarching goals.

To truly thrive as an ANSEP Program Assistant, you need a balanced mix of strong organizational skills, adaptability, and a genuine interest in supporting youth. This role is active and hands‑on; you will be managing day‑to‑day logistics like tracking student attendance and prepping activity supplies, while keeping a close eye on student safety and ensuring university policies are followed. Because you work directly with students, clear communication skills and the ability to maintain professional boundaries are essential to keeping the environment positive and secure.

Thriving here also requires flexibility and a team‑first mindset. You will need to be comfortable working occasional evenings and weekends, and even staying in the UAA dorms a few times a year to help supervise statewide events. Finally, you must be comfortable driving a 15‑passenger van to transport students safely if needed, managing their behavior on the road and strictly following safety guidelines.

Schedule:

While this role will normally follow a standard 9‑month academic calendar (August through May), this year requires an early start in mid‑July 2026 to help support site setup and launch preparations. Following this initial setup phase, the role will transition into the standard academic schedule running through May 2027. Because the position aligns with the school calendar, it includes scheduled, unpaid time off during standard school holidays and term breaks.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Some college coursework in a STEM or education field and one to two years progressively responsible experience related to school‑aged children, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Teaching certification preferred.
  • Current CPR with AED/First Aid certification preferred.
  • Position requires driving an ANSEP vehicle. Applicant must be 21 and older to apply and have a valid AK driver's license with three years of a driving record on a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift or move 25 to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Experience working with rural and/or Indigenous Alaska populations preferred.

This position is located on the UA campus in Nome. It is a temporary full‑time, 9‑month hourly staff position. New hires will be placed on the UA Temporary Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 77, with a 34 % geo‑differential based on education and experience.
