Palmer Correctional Center is currently seeking to fill multiple Correctional Officer 4 vacancies that will work either 42-hour or 84-hour work weeks. These positions vary in responsibilities, including oversight of day-to-day operations of a 24-hour facility. Duties include, but are not limited to, overseeing counts, housing searches, urinalyses, inmate movement in and out of the facility, grievance investigations, inmate counsel, inmate work assignments, commissary, property, security, armory maintenance, and providing the assistance and guidance necessary to ensure the security of the institution is properly maintained and not compromised.

These positions may be responsible for the management of the facility during the absence of the Superintendents or Lieutenant;
Staff Sergeants also oversee various inmate rehabilitative programs and activities in accordance with Departmental policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal and state statutes and regulations.

Palmer Correctional Center is a medium and minimum custody facility located in Sutton which houses up to 500 inmates and 107 employees. We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

Adaptability: adjusts planned work by gathering relevant information and applying critical thinking to address multiple demands and competing priorities in a changing environment.

Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.

Supervision:
Plans, distributes, and monitors work assignments; sets task priorities; evaluates work performance and provides feedback to others on their performance; ensures that staff are appropriately selected, utilized, and developed, and that they are treated in a fair and equitable manner. Assignments include the authority and responsibility to recommend or independently take action to employ (i.e., appoint, transfer, promote), discipline or discharge, or adjudicate grievances of direct reports.

Successful completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy or the equivalent program accredited by the Alaska Police Standards Council

AND

One year of experience performing duties in a specialized area requiring advanced training and/or certification in support of the custody, security, and reformation of prisoners in an adult correctional institution. The required experience is met by service as a Correctional Officer 3 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Two years of experience performing duties which support the custody, security, and reformation of prisoners in an adult correctional institution. The required experience is met by service as a Correctional Officer 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR

Two years of experience independently performing the full range of probation/parole duties to assess, evaluate, supervise, and guide incarcerated or released felony adult offenders. The required experience is met by service as an Adult Probation Officer 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

At the time of employment: be 21 years of age and a United States citizen or a United States National; have a high school or home school diploma recognized or certified by a state or a local school district within a state as having met that state's graduation requirement; or have a General Educational Development certificate.
