Position: Mechanic I w/CDL / Mechanic I No CDL (DOE) (Thousand Hour)

This position is responsible for the mechanical repair and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.

Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values:

This position may be called in to provide support outside regular business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Candidate hired will be offered the position (Mechanic I-No CDL/Mechanic I) that is commensurate with their experience and licensure. Candidates hired will be placed in the pay grade (J or L) commensurate with the position for which they were hired. Candidates hired without a CDL can advance to Mechanic I upon acquiring their CDL. J Grade currently starting at $28.45hr. L Grade currently starting at $31.40hr.

J1 - DOE

L1 - DOE

Mechanic I (No CDL)
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the occupational field, sufficient to understand the major duties of the position.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s License, issued by the State of Alaska required for the position being hired.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed, and respond to emergency calls.
  • ASE Technician certification preferred.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check and post-offer physical.
Mechanic I (With CDL)
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the occupational field, sufficient to understand the major duties of the position.
  • Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License, issued by the State of Alaska required for the position being hired, and possession of a valid Department of Transportation medical card.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed, and respond to emergency calls.
  • ASE Technician certification preferred.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen and post-offer employment physical.
Responsibilities – Mechanic I (No CDL)
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.
  • Evaluates mechanical problems using diagnostic equipment.
  • Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, engine, fuel system, cooling system, HVAC, brake and suspension problems and makes repairs.
  • Rebuilds, replaces or repairs major vehicle components.
  • Performs welding to repair body components.
  • Installs new equipment.
  • Estimates time and materials needed to complete repairs.
  • Researches illustrated parts breakdowns to identify required parts.
  • Maintains daily maintenance logs.
  • Makes arrangements with vendors.
  • Test-drives non-CDL vehicles and equipment under 26,000 lbs to ensure operational status.
  • Orders parts and supplies from approved vendors.
  • Responds to emergency calls for service; makes field repairs.
  • Assists with snow removal operations.
  • Performs related duties.
Responsibilities – Mechanic I (With CDL)
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance on department vehicles and equipment.
