Job SummaryThe Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) seeks a Heavy Duty Mechanic to maintain and repair heavy-duty and light-duty equipment used in the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other agency vehicles. The role includes diagnosing, repairing, and modifying a variety of systems including transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engines, emissions, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems.
The incumbent will receive paid training to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License if qualified.
- Professionally maintain all heavy-duty and light-duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other user agency vehicles being operated in the area.
- Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods, performing routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
- Diagnose, maintain, repair, and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, as well as fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems, including air and electrical systems for light and heavy-duty equipment.
Class A Commercial Driver’s License required. Candidates must be able to obtain a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License within 120 days of hire and must pass a pre‑employment drug test.
Paid training is available to help qualified applicants obtain a CDL.
Employees must provide their own hand tools and will receive a bi‑weekly tool allowance.

The position is located at MP 306 Dalton Highway, Sag River, AK. Travel may include day trips and overnight stays in remote locations, and small plane transportation to maintain equipment.
