Role OverviewThe Equipment Support Technician supports preventative maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, and repair of production and assembly equipment, including CNC machines and electrically controlled systems, at the Palmer, MA site. This role requires strong electrical and mechanical expertise to diagnose and repair equipment involving controls, motors, sensors, and safety circuits. The technician will have extensive knowledge of machine rebuild practices, preventative maintenance, electrical troubleshooting, and teardown and rebuild methods used on IMI’s machinery.
The primary objective is to maximize equipment uptime, safety, and lifecycle performance.
Work Environment: On-site (Palmer, MA)
Key Responsibilities- Develop and execute preventive maintenance programs for production and assembly equipment, including CNC machines and automated systems.
- Diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical failures, including PLCs, motor controls, sensors, drives, HMIs, wiring, and safety circuits.
- Troubleshoot and maintain machine control systems and electrical panels in compliance with safety and electrical standards.
- Respond to emergency equipment breakdowns and perform effective root cause troubleshooting to restore operations quickly.
- Lead and support Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) activities to reduce downtime, scrap, and equipment losses.
- Collaborate with Engineering on electrical upgrades and control modifications, automation improvements, and new equipment integration.
- Determine when internal repair versus OEM or contractor support is required for complex electrical or mechanical issues.
- Coordinate and oversee contractors performing machinery installation, electrical troubleshooting, and equipment repairs.
- Manage and maintain critical electrical and mechanical spare parts inventories, including drives, motors, sensors, and controls.
- Fabricate or modify mechanical components to print tolerances when feasible to support equipment repair and improvement.
- Document equipment changes and ensure electrical schematics, drawings, and maintenance records are accurate and current.
- Train operators and technicians on proper equipment use, electrical safety awareness, and maintenance best practices.
- Proactively identify and implement equipment reliability, safety, and productivity improvements.
- Participate in site Kaizen and Lean initiatives focused on equipment performance and operational excellence.
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA and IMI health, safety, and environmental requirements, including lockout/tagout and electrical safety.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or apprenticeship in electrical, industrial maintenance, or mechatronics preferred.
- 8+ years of industrial equipment maintenance experience, with strong electrical troubleshooting and controls capability.
- Hands-on experience with PLC-controlled equipment, motor drives, sensors, relays, and industrial electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
