This is a Fixed Term position.

Job Summary

The Hospital School Teacher will adapt and develop educational materials to meet the unique needs of hospitalized patients who may be admitted at LPCH, El Camino or staying at the Ronald McDonald House. The Teacher will work with already established educational materials from patients’ enrolled schools and, if present, may follow the patients’ established Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) to assist students in reaching their full learning potential.

Teachers assess patients’ and their siblings’ educational needs, provide educational support, serve as educational liaison between their home school, and provide academic instruction for schoolwork. Teachers provide some academic instruction across all disciplines and grade levels, regardless of population assigned. Teachers contribute to a positive hospital experience that supports academic achievement as well as the needs of the whole child.

May provide educational services and support for patients’ siblings.

Essential Functions
  • Act as the liaison between the district school teachers, leadership, and the healthcare team.
  • Plan, implement, and document an individualized plan to continue the education of hospitalized children.
  • Assess how each student learns best and adapt teaching methods to fit the unique learning needs.
  • Develop and plan creative teaching and learning activities; provide appropriate teaching materials and supplies.
  • Administer and interpret diagnostic, educational and cognitive aptitude tests, if applicable.
  • Evaluate and summarize outcomes of school‑based teaching methods.
  • Work closely with hospital staff, LPCH Hospital School Teachers, parents and school professionals to plan educational services provided to students post‑discharge. Consult general education teachers on an as‑needed basis.
  • Participate in planning and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP), if applicable.
  • Maintain knowledge of current educational materials and trends; complete annual continuing education required for certification(s).
  • Orient volunteers regarding policies and procedures; guide volunteers to assist them in providing quality interaction with patients.
  • May provide educational services and support for patients’ siblings.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree

Experience

One (1) year of classroom teaching experience or hospital school teaching.

License/Certification

Current Valid California Teaching Credential or valid credential within the last 3 years.

  • Ability to work well with children of all ages through advanced interpersonal skills that are required to interact with patients and families.

  • Ability to identify and communicate the unique cognitive, social and emotional needs of medically fragile children and their impact on school success.
  • Ability to show respect and appreciation for others and their uniqueness; remain curious and appreciate cultural differences.
