Assistant Professor of Latin American Literature and Cultures, including Brazil

The salary range for this position is $115,133 – $135,388 for the academic year .
The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.

The Department of Iberian and Latin American Cultures (ILAC) at Stanford University invites applications for a tenure-line Assistant Professor in Latin American literature and cultures, including Brazil.

We welcome applicants working in any period, genre, or critical approach, including but not limited to literary studies, cultural studies, film and media, and visual culture.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, advise doctoral students, and participate in the broader intellectual life of the department and the university. ILAC is a diverse and internationally oriented department; it is housed within the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages and maintains strong ties to interdisciplinary programs across the humanities.

The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2027.

In addition to English, native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is required. Native or near-native proficiency in both languages is strongly preferred.

Candidates are expected to have the Ph.D. in hand by the appointment start date (September 1, 2027). We seek candidates with a demonstrated record of or clear promise in research, strong teaching experience, and a commitment to graduate mentorship.

  • two writing samples (8, words each), one in English, one in Spanish or Portuguese
  • sample syllabus for an undergraduate survey course in literature
  • three letters of recommendation
