Mechanical Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer
What to Expect
As a Supplier Industrialization Engineer focused on Camera and Lens Mechanical systems at Tesla, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting and developing robust designs, creating detailed drawing packages, and leading industrialization efforts across the full lifecycle of camera and lens top-level assembly (TLA) projects.
Join our innovative Camera/Lens TLA Supplier Industrialization Engineering team to help build a world‑class supply chain. This team supports the entire product lifecycle for vehicle and energy products, with a strong emphasis on camera and lens modules. You'll support generating design drawing packages as a mechanical engineer role, drive manufacturing process innovation from early concept stages through production as a SIE role, including Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) analysis, supplier selection, validation, and ongoing quality improvements.
Expect a fast‑paced environment where you'll own high‑profile supply chains, ensure on‑time delivery, and resolve quality issues through data‑driven root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Use mechanical design software to create manufacturable, robust, low‑risk and complete mechanical drawings, adhering to GD&T standard
- Create complete, organized drawing packages, including 2D assembly and component drawings for camera and lens systems
- Perform mechanical design analysis, including calculations and simulations, to optimize structures and components while ensuring they meet project requirements
- Conduct tolerance stack‑up analyses and Monte Carlo simulations to define specifications, identify risks, predict production PPMs, and provide feedback to design teams
- Lead or support suppliers in mechanical design (for products or production equipment), fabrication, assembly, and debugging processes
- Execute standard operating procedures for camera/lens mechanical design and build, while understanding project scope, specifications, and regulatory requirements
- Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) to optimize camera module and lens designs for robust performance and manufacturability
- Conduct design risk assessments using optical simulation tools, statistical methods, and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) to enhance product reliability and image quality
- Optimize design solutions in the early phases to achieve superior performance, scalability, and cost efficiency
- Manage supplier performance in quality, on‑time delivery, and production capacity, driving continuous improvements in operations, scalability, cost, and quality
- Bachelor’s Degree in Optics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience demonstrating exceptional ability
- Experience with design and development of Mechanical/Camera/Lens Design
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to conceptualize and create mechanical designs
- Expertise in drafting engineering drawings and performing tolerance stack‑up analysis
- Proficient in GD&T, 3D CAD software, CATIA preferred
- Practical experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Strong background in Six Sigma methodologies; DFSS experience is highly desired
- Solid knowledge of statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP or Minitab), predictive modeling, and applications
- Opto‑mechanical expertise, including statistical tolerance analysis, design quality assessment, and improvement techniques
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 20% of the time), including on short notice, to engage with contract manufacturers (CMs)
