The Stanford University Department of Public Safety (SUDPS) exists to provide a safe, secure atmosphere which is conducive to freedom of expression and movement, for all people and their property at Stanford University, within the constraints of the Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances. The members of the Stanford Department of Public Safety are committed to providing high quality public safety services to the Stanford Community with a strong emphasis on customer service.
Assigned to the Support Services Division and working under minimal supervision, the SUDPS Special Projects Program Manager will manage a wide range of projects using strategic, creative, and innovative skills to improve existing department functions and resolve new areas of concern in support of the department’s safety mission. Work is performed autonomously, with no specific instructions or prescribed procedures, requiring the ability to conduct research to identify and develop responses to specific unmet needs while exercising discretion and judgment regarding matters of significance to the department and university.
PossibleAssignments
- Manage cross-agency data projects (city/county/state/federal partners), including data sharing agreements, governance, and quality control.
- Review mutual-aid or partner-agency documentation (e.g., fire/EMS response, major incidents) and ensure compliance with standards.
- Coordinate and track compliance-related submissions (e.g., state crime reporting, federal grants, accreditation standards, audit requests).
- Support Clery-related operational processes (as assigned), including documentation tracking, report preparation support, and coordination with campus partners to ensure timely inputs.
- Compile, validate, and analyze crime/traffic/use-of-force/calls-for-service data to support mandated reporting and executive dashboards.
- Develop and implement department policies and programs (e.g., UAS/drone operations, counter-drone detection, body-worn camera, records retention).
- Draft command-level memos, policy updates, briefing materials, and standard operating procedures based on research and stakeholder input.
- Conduct research on best practices (training, de-escalation, community policing, event security, emergency management, Clery compliance) and propose solutions.
- Draft and maintain policies and procedures.
- Assist with grant support (data, narratives, deliverable tracking) when applicable.
- Coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of community outreach and crime prevention activities.
- Provide emergency management support.
- Support the department’s training manager with the delivery of training; etc.
The successful incumbent will manage multiple priorities simultaneously; balance a demanding workload independently; and exercise critical and data analytical skills.
The incumbent will work collaboratively and effectively with department and university leaders as well as external providers to implement security related technologies or programs that meet the university's mission and reflect its values. A deep understanding and appreciation of the culture and operations of the department and the university are essential.
This individual will be a part of the department’s emergency response and special events management; the successful candidate will be familiar with the operations and requirements of a police/public safety department.
All benefits-eligible members of the Stanford Department of Public Safety are considered essential (or required) university personnel for purposes of managing emergencies and critical incidents impacting significant portions of the campus. As such, all benefits-eligible DPS personnel are expected to respond to campus during a major emergency. In conjunction with other DPS personnel, the incumbent may be responsible for implementing Incident Command System (ICS) during large scale and/or high-profile special events and critical incidents.
Shift work (days, evenings, weekends, including holidays) and outdoor work may be required. This position is in-person (not hybrid or remote) and subject to shift work.
