The Office of Development (OOD) advances Stanford’s mission by raising philanthropic support from alumni, parents, families, friends, and institutional funders. Working in concert with volunteers and academic leaders, OOD staff members strive to accelerate Stanford’s purposeful impact in the world. Every member of the Office of Development staff plays a role in providing the university’s donors with the service and attention that ensures an exceptionally positive and fulfilling philanthropic experience.

Reporting to the Regional Director of Development, Northern California, in University Major Gifts, a unit of the Office of Development (OOD), the Associate Director is responsible for supporting regional fundraising efforts with individuals (undergraduate alumni and dual degree alumni) in the Bay Area. They will operate independently in assigned areas and take responsibility for prospect identification and solicitation, proposal development, and coordination of internal support activities.

They will work with OOD colleagues, donors, volunteer leaders, faculty and other university staff to assist in establishing and maintaining relationships with all university constituencies. The Associate Director will also collaborate with university faculty and leaders to create and execute regional donor events.

Gift work requires understanding the university’s overarching strategic priorities and emerging initiatives, as well as the programs and aspirations of all seven of Stanford’s schools and the other large units. Consultation, coordination, and collaboration with school and unit‑based colleagues is essential.

• Develop solicitation goals, objectives, and strategies for development projects and/or specific donor populations or geographic regions. Cultivate and solicit gifts to the university.
• Manage an active portfolio and track solicitation assignments and progress. Work with a portfolio of assigned prospects to cultivate, solicit, and steward their support.
• Take responsibility for a wide range of fundraising activities, including maintaining an active level of contacts, identifying new prospective donors and volunteers, providing stewardship, and coordinating volunteer fundraising efforts.
• Develop relationships leading to gifts in the $250,000–$5,000,000 range.
• Stay informed on current university initiatives and activities.
• Enhance relationships between current and prospective major donors and the school or unit’s faculty, students, dean, staff and volunteers.
• Design and manage appeals (e.g., direct mail, email, video, phone, and other channels) to target key populations to maximize fundraising potential.
• In collaboration with central colleagues, school/unit colleagues, and event staff, design, manage, and execute events to cultivate and steward donors.
• Establish ongoing relationships with individual alumni through personal in‑person and virtual visits, phone calls, and meaningful contacts.
• Prioritize prospects, prepare background information, make volunteer assignments as appropriate, and follow up with volunteers to ensure completion of assigned solicitations.
