Nurse Practitioner​/Physician Assistant, Pulmonology - Lung Transplant

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including sensitive cultural diversity, patient care, ethical treatment, safety, emergency management, teamwork, respect, ongoing education and training, communication, safety programs, national patient safety goals, licensure and health screening. All duties are performed in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, the Service Standards, and the Code of Conduct.

In these roles, providers work in collaboration with supervising physicians and follow standardized procedures. They may perform only those medical services to which they are competent and within the scope described below. If a task exceeds their competence, they shall consult or refer to a supervising physician.

• Evaluates and treats patients with acute or chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns as per written procedures.
• Obtains complete histories and performs physical exams with assessment of findings.
• Performs or orders diagnostic studies as indicated.
• Administers, orders, furnishes, and prescribes medications.
• Orders and collects specimens for laboratory tests, screening, and therapeutic procedures.
• Orders PT, OT, respiratory therapy, radiology exams, and nursing services.
• Performs designated procedures following demonstrated competency.
• Obtains informed consent as indicated.
• Initiates hospital admission and discharge arrangements and completes required paperwork.
• Enrolls patients in investigational studies and orders necessary tests/medications per IRB protocol.
• Assists the supervising surgeon in the operating room as RN first assistant, without acting as a scrub nurse.
• Recognizes age‑specific patient needs.
• Communicates effectively with patients, families, staff, and community members of diverse backgrounds.
• Initiates life‑saving procedures when immediate attention is required.
• Facilitates coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and community resources.
• Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory, and clinical policies.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
• Provides patient teaching and counseling.
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervision is provided by a supervising physician with clinical privileges ndardized procedures approved by the supervising physician and the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee are mandatory. Other mechanisms include on‑site or electronic phone supervision; random chart screens or audits; ongoing professional practice evaluation. A physician cannot supervise more than four NP/PAs at one time.

• Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution.
• Graduate of a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
• Licensed as a PA in the State of California.
• Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) by the American Heart Association.
• DEA license for Schedule II‑V controlled substances if prescribing to outpatients.
• Additional board certification may be required by certain services.

• Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
• Graduate of an NP program accredited by the National League of Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
• Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
• Certified NP in California.
• National board certification as NP from an ABNS‑accredited agency.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) by the American Heart Association.
• Furnishing license from the Board of Registered Nursing if furnishing medications.
• DEA license for Schedule II‑V controlled substances if prescribing to outpatients.
• Additional board certification may be required by certain specialties.

New graduate NPs have six months from graduation to obtain national board certification.

Observables needed for these essential functions are demonstrated through experience, education, licensure, or certification.

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role. Typical new hires join at the minimum to mid salary range of $87.55 to $109.44 per hour.
