Clinical Nurse Specialist Responsibilities
- Provide care for patients with multiple or complex health needs within a specific clinical area
- Use advanced clinical skills in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of patients
- Use theoretical and clinical expertise to assist health care providers and patients in promoting or achieving optimal health
- Develop and implement standards of nursing practice
- Serve as a consultant or expert resource person for other health providers
- Facilitate an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to meeting the needs of patients
- Seek consultations and make referrals as needed
- Promote research to improve clinical nursing practice
- Analyze unit patient care plans for evidence of documented standards of practice, share findings with staff, and collaborate in developing assessment tools
- Demonstrate expertise in daily patient care, providing collaboration, direction, and instruction to staff in the nursing process
- Elect, implement, and evaluate comforting, therapeutic, restorative, and preventative nursing measures for selected patients, including planning and delivery of special patient care problems
- Collaborate with nursing managers and researchers to perform, assist with, initiate, evaluate and revise multidisciplinary nursing plans of care coordinated with medical plans
- Maintain and teach specialized knowledge and skills necessary for the specialty service area
- Offer consultative services within nursing services and to other disciplines in planning, development, execution and evaluation of clinical research
- Participate in the hospital’s quality improvement program; collaborate in setting unit standards of care and monitor indicators of quality projects
- Provide direct patient care with consistent assessment of current patient care situations, priorities, and needs
- Provide safety, comfort care, and treatment of patients according to established legal, ethical, and institutional standards
- Serve as a consultant to patients, families, and staff
- Establish and monitor care standards and make recommendations for changes in clinical practice based on professional standards and evidence
- Demonstrate a proficient level of understanding of daily patient care, providing collaboration, direction, and instruction to staff in the nursing process
- Maintain and teach specialized knowledge and skills necessary for the specialty service area
- Consult within nursing services and interprofessional teams in planning, development, execution and evaluation of care delivery to improve quality outcomes and practice compliance
- Have a basic understanding of quality improvement cycles and change management
- Participate in the hospital’s quality improvement program and monitor indicators of quality and safety trends
- Education:
Master’s degree in a work‑related discipline/field from an accredited college or university - Experience:
Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience - Licensure/Certification:
- Registered Nurse by California Board of Registered Nursing
- Clinical Nurse Specialist by California Board of Registered Nursing
- Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA) or RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, enrolled in a CNS program, must be completed within four years of job acceptance - Experience:
Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience - Licensure/Certification:
- California Registered Nurse (RN)
- BLS for healthcare providers
- Advanced life support for area of specialty (NRP/PALS/ACLS) and certification in field of specialty
