Job Description
Fixed Term Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant for the Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Stanford Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto, CA.
Role DescriptionThe CVICU is a 29‑bed unit (expanding to 36) caring for over 750 pediatric and adult patients annually. The unit is technologically advanced and serves as a major referral center for pediatric heart transplants and advanced cardiac therapies (ECMO, Berlin Heart, Heart Mate). The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team consists of 19 NPs and PAs with 90+ years of combined experience.
Responsibilities- Pre‑round, develop daily plans of care, present and implement plans.
- Participate in rounds, write daily notes, respond to nursing concerns.
- Perform procedures: intubation/extubation, central/hemodialysis lines, arterial lines, chest tube insertion/removal, pacer wire removal, PD drain placement.
- Provide pathway for advanced practice opportunities: clinical ladder, grand rounds, app council, task forces.
- Assist in peri‑operative care under supervising physicians.
- Document compliance with Joint Commission, hospital service standards, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Provide routine and advanced care for acute and chronic conditions per standardized protocols approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee.
- Consult with physicians when tasks exceed competence or for diagnostic/therapeutic decisions.
- Coordinate admissions, discharges, laboratory ordering, therapy services, and investigational study enrollment.
- Obtain informed consent and maintain patient, family, and community communication.
- Participate in quality improvement and education of fellows and residents.
- Education:
NP – Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing and graduate of an accredited NP program (NLNAC or CCNE); PA – Bachelor’s or higher and graduate of an accredited PA program (ARC‑PA). - Licensure: NP – Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner license in California; PA – Physician Assistant license in California.
- Certification: NP – National Board Certification (ABNS) within six months of graduation; PA – NCCPA certification.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA) required. DEA license if prescribing controlled substances.
- Prefer pediatric cardiac and/or ICU experience. Previous exposure to ECMO, VAD, or cardiac transplant is preferred.
Hourly: $89.80 to $109.44 (minimum to mid‑point range), depending on education, experience, and market data.
