Plumbing and HVAC maintenance duties performed at the journey level. Duties include preventive maintenance, emergency response, and installation, repair, and troubleshooting of plumbing and HVAC systems as outlined in the Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes.
Job Responsibilities- Work under general supervision and perform maintenance tasks of substantial complexity in two or more trades.
- Follow prescribed procedures and maintain considerable independence under the direction of a shop manager or lead.
- Work alone or as part of a crew; spot‑check during assignments or upon completion.
- Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures for gas, water, sanitary lines, storm drains, toilets, sinks, boilers, heat exchangers, valves, pumps, drinking fountains, water heaters, etc.
- Cut, thread, bend, and join pipe using flanges, fittings, solder, caulking, welding, epoxy, and other materials.
- Perform preventive maintenance, replace washers on leaky faucets, mend burst pipes, and clear clogged drains.
- Detect malfunctions in plumbing systems (hot water, chilled water, process cooling water) and shut systems down for repair.
- Respond to quick‑response calls throughout campus using good judgment to accurately assess problems.
- Perform skilled heating, ventilating, and air‑conditioning work at the journey level.
- Maintain and repair all types of HVAC equipment, including refrigeration units.
- Work in diverse environments such as offices, libraries, student residences, food preparation, storage, research labs, and shops.
- Respond to quick‑response calls campus‑wide and perform preventive maintenance and repairs.
Education & Experience: Journey‑level knowledge equivalent to four years of completion in an apprentice program or an equivalent combination of education and work experience, plus four years of actual work in the plumber/HVAC trades.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Skilled in tools, equipment, and methods of the trade.
- Understand complex troubleshooting and repair of plumbing, hydronic, and steam systems.
- Knowledge of physical properties of steam and condensate, and equipment used to maintain these systems.
- Ability to work from plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of all applicable trade codes.
- Respond to emergency calls night, weekend, and holiday; willing to work variable shifts.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Non‑commercial Class C Driver’s license.
- Preferred: journeyman card in plumbing/HVAC or other recognized technical credential.
- Work in confined spaces or at high elevations.
- Constant bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, and forceful grasping.
- Stand, walk, lift/carry/push/pull frequently; occasionally kneel, crawl, reach/work above shoulders, and handle objects > 40 lb.
- Perform strenuous and repetitive work; lift at least 50 lb.
- Work outdoors in variable weather; wear required uniform and PPE.
- Ability to operate equipment such as boom lifts, scissor lifts, cranes, and forklifts.
Must comply with California Vehicle Code, Stanford driving requirements, university policies, and the collective bargaining agreement.
PayThe expected pay for this position is $54.78 per hour (Step 1). Placement is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
