Backend Developer, Cloud Engineer - Software
We’re a venture-backed startup headquartered in downtown Palo Alto, preparing for a public launch later in 2026. Backed by leading institutional investors and strategic angels, we’re building a verified operating system designed to run at national scale.
Our platform brings together digital identity, secure communication, modern money movement, and intelligence-driven services in a single system. Built on modern financial rails and applied AI, it supports real-world use cases such as payments, remittances, and digital services - designed for reliability, security, and scale.
We’re starting with deployments across markets where modern infrastructure meets real operational demand, and expanding globally from there. Initial institutional deployments are underway, with commercial agreements in place and revenue already being realized.
If you’re motivated by building durable systems and shaping the next generation of digital infrastructure, we’d love to build with you.
The OpportunityWe’re seeking Backend Engineers to help build and scale the core backend systems of our platform. This is a hands‑on, high‑impact role for engineers who thrive in ambiguity, take ownership of complex systems, and enjoy shaping technical direction while still shipping production code.
You’ll work closely with founding engineers and product partners to design, implement, and evolve distributed backend services that must be secure, reliable, and performant at national scale. Depending on experience, you may own specific subsystems, contribute to architectural decisions, and help establish engineering best practices as the team grows.
This role offers the opportunity to apply strong engineering fundamentals in a fast‑moving startup environment, with scope and responsibility matched to experience and clear room to grow.
What You Will OwnYou’ll take end‑to‑end ownership of key backend and platform domains, from design through production operation and iteration. Scope and responsibility will be matched to experience.
- Design, build, and operate scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot, with a focus on correctness, performance, and maintainability.
- Contribute to system architecture decisions, collaborating with peers to ensure services scale cleanly from early adoption to large‑scale usage.
- Write high‑quality, production‑ready code with clear ownership of service health, performance, and reliability.
- Design and evolve data models and access patterns using relational databases (e.g., Postgre
SQL, MySQL) and, where appropriate, distributed databases. - Build and maintain event‑driven systems (e.g., Kafka, Pub/Sub) to support reliable asynchronous communication between services.
- Own and improve internal and external APIs (REST and/or gRPC), ensuring clarity, backward compatibility, and long‑term extensibility.
- Partner closely with product, frontend, and mobile teams to define efficient, evolvable API contracts that support high‑quality user experiences.
- Drive service reliability through thoughtful design, monitoring, and testing (unit, integration, performance).
- Participate in on‑call rotations and production incident response, applying learnings to improve system resilience and developer experience.
- Use AI‑assisted development tools to improve velocity, code quality, and documentation, and help establish effective team workflows.
- Contribute to a strong backend engineering culture through code reviews, design feedback, and knowledge sharing.
- Help define and reinforce backend engineering best practices with an emphasis on ownership, pragmatism, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate closely with product, frontend, mobile, and infrastructure partners to deliver cohesive end‑to‑end systems.
- Experience building, operating, and scaling backend systems in production, with impact on reliability, performance, and correctness. Scope and expectations will be matched to experience.
- Strong foundation in distributed systems concepts, including service‑oriented architectures, data consistency, performance bottlenecks,…
