A Brief Overview
The Principal Software Engineer is responsible for building or testing the front‑end, back‑end, and mobile interface for web applications or software tools at Stanford Health Care. The role collaborates on design issues with product managers, designers, engineers, and infrastructure teams to deliver robust solutions that showcase SHC’s brand while enhancing the user experience. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of web development.

What you will do- Provide strategic direction on mid‑to‑long‑term technology development in line with SHC’s goals on performance, privacy, security, availability, maintainability, and user experience.
- Collaborate with business partners, vendors, and developers to define strategic and tactical solutions.
- Identify opportunities to improve IT service quality through automation and process defect reduction.
- Implement in‑house proofs of concept, facilitate technical vendor evaluations, and document findings.
- Share knowledge of emerging technology and trends with the technical team and senior management.
- Partner with MyHealth, SHC Mobile, UX Design, and Internal Web teams.
- Contribute hands‑on to all phases of the software development lifecycle, including analysis, design, implementation, automation, and QA.
- Develop functional prototypes from wireframes and mockups and create proper documentation.
- Build websites, perform unit testing, implement solutions, and provide production application support.
- Troubleshoot problems related to user interaction, webpage performance, and mobile web optimization.
- Collaborate with business, functional, technology, and operational owners to refine and improve the user experience.
- Stay current with industry trends concerning front‑end technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Web Design, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.
- 10+ years of directly related experience.

- Expert knowledge of the relevant technology stack.
- Knowledge of front‑end optimization and performance techniques.
- Knowledge and application of industry best practices in rich web development.
- Knowledge of user behavior and interaction design patterns.
- Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, web technologies, protocols, and cross‑browser compatibility issues.
- Knowledge of architecting or building front‑end components and libraries.
- Ability to develop websites for multiple contexts (mobile, tablet, desktop, etc.) and locales.
- Ability to build and ship production‑quality software to a large consumer audience with user‑centric design.
- Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, dynamic team environment.
- Strong programming knowledge and the ability to communicate complex technical abstractions.
- Ability to influence peers and management and champion best practices.
- Expert knowledge of front‑end browser technologies including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript/ECMAScript.
- Knowledge of Semantic Markup, AJAX, JSON, and JavaScript libraries (jQuery, YUI, etc.).
- Strong experience with UI libraries and front‑end tools (jQuery, Bootstrap, Angular
JS, LessCSS, SASS). - Advanced knowledge of HCI, usability, and interaction design patterns.
- Proven ability to develop websites for multiple target devices (mobile, tablet, desktop, etc.).
- Proven ability to build and ship production‑quality software to a large consumer audience.

BasePay Scale
Generally starting at $94.35 – $125.03 per hour. The final salary will consider internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training and is not a guaranteed wage.
