What To Expect

Consider before submitting an application:
This position is expected to start August or September 2026 and continue through the fall term (ending approximately December 2026) or into Winter/Spring 2027 if available and opportunities arise. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full‑time (40 hours per week) and on‑site, for most internships. The internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in an academic program.

Recent graduates seeking employment after graduation and not returning to school should apply for full‑time positions, not internships.

International Students:
If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on‑site. Many students will be limited to part‑time during the academic year.

About

the Team

As an Embedded Software Engineering Intern on the High Voltage System (HVS) Team, you will help deliver the high‑quality software that enables our vehicles to be the best in the world. The team develops all the software required to make our products (past, present, and future) the best by writing low‑level firmware drivers, implementing software algorithms, and designing and building validation/test infrastructure.

The HVS team places an especially large emphasis on ensuring we deliver a product that is safe, reliable, has high‑quality user‑facing indicators (range, SOC, power, etc.), and optimizes our overall customer experience.

What You’ll Do
  • Firmware Development
    • Develop low‑level firmware drivers to support new and existing microcontrollers.
    • Design and implement real‑time software algorithms for features across the high‑voltage system, including battery management, power conversion, charge port, state‑of‑charge estimation, power estimation, AC‑DC conversion, DC‑DC conversion, and new charging protocols.
    • Work with cross‑functional teams to develop requirements and test plans for new software features, diagnostics, algorithms, etc.
  • Validation Infrastructure
    • Develop scalable software‑in‑the‑loop (SIL) and hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) infrastructure for rapid prototyping, simulation, and validation.
    • Develop and enhance existing battery and hardware models to ensure simulations are representative of the real world.
    • Design simulation frameworks that are flexible to being integrated with Tesla subcomponents and behavioural models.
What You’ll Bring
  • Currently working toward a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field; graduation date between December 2026 and December 2027.
  • Proficiency in C and/or C++ as well as Python.
  • Strong software fundamentals.
  • Experience working with large‑scale coding projects over an extended period.
  • Experience with real‑time systems and embedded microprocessor tools.
  • Experience with control systems.
  • Experience with fundamental hardware components and their analysis tools.
  • Experience reading datasheets and hardware schematics.

Expected Compensation

$42.07 – $58.89 per hour plus benefits. Pay offered may vary depending on market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in benefit plans will be provided if an offer of employment is received.
