Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Java Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low-maintenance, zero‑downtime platforms and applications. The role supports our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence at its core.
Position DescriptionAs a key member of the engineering staff, you will work across the organization to provide a friction‑less experience for our customers and maintain high standards of protection and availability. You will deliver high‑quality products in a hyper‑growth environment where priorities shift quickly.
Position Responsibilities- Scope, design, and build scalable, resilient distributed systems
- Define product requirements and use technical expertise to converge on the right solutions
- Collaborate cross‑functionally throughout the entire software lifecycle
- Lead design sessions and code reviews to elevate engineering quality
- Develop reusable application components and patterns from both business and technical perspectives
- Utilize developer tooling and Azure services for tasks such as source control, builds, deployment, operations, and real‑time communication to perform advanced Java application design and maintenance under minimal direction
- Mentor junior engineers
- Share best practices and continually improve processes within and across teams
- Advanced programming experience with at least two modern languages such as Java, C++, Python, or C# including object‑oriented design
- Proven understanding of microservices‑oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs
- Experience designing architecture and patterns for new and existing systems, focusing on reliability and scalability
- Advanced knowledge of Dev Ops concepts and cloud architecture
- Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure‑as‑code
- Strong problem‑solving ability
- Capability to thrive in a fast‑paced, startup‑like environment
- Keen understanding of developer tooling across the lifecycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real‑time communication)
- In‑depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
- Advanced Power Shell scripting skills
- Advanced understanding of monitoring tools and concepts
- Advanced knowledge of security protocols and products
- 4+ years of software development within a Java framework (J2EE, web containers, etc.)
- 3+ years of architecture and design experience
- 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
- 2+ years of experience with open‑source frameworks
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent work experience
