Job Description

The Staff Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities
  • Assess and record patient status and identify care needs upon admission and at the point of care entry.
  • Organize assessment health data so that it is accurate, complete, and accessible.
  • Identify problems that need immediate attention.
  • Validate diagnoses with the patient/family and other health‑care team members.
  • Document diagnoses to facilitate determination of expected outcomes and plan of care.
  • Initiate a problem list at admission and update it as needed, incorporating principles of age‑specific care into the patient’s plan.
  • Document that the patient’s individualized plan has been discussed with and agreed upon by the patient/family.
  • Begin discharge planning at admission; consult with patient/family and the health‑care team regarding the discharge plan.
  • Identify teaching needs on admission and throughout the hospital stay.
  • Arrange conferences with patient/family and other team members when indicated to plan care.
  • Prioritize and organize evidence‑based nursing interventions that reflect established standards of care.
  • Provide individualized, mutually agreeable education that is founded on evidence‑based practice and research guidelines.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and patient responses.
  • Continuously review the patient’s health data to keep the plan of care updated.
  • Ensure revisions to the plan are systematic, ongoing, and driven by realistic, measurable goals.
  • Document the patient’s progression toward identified outcomes.
  • Identify unmet outcomes and provide direction for continuity of care.
  • Reassess nursing actions for effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Communicate with patient/family and health‑care team regarding patient care and nursing’s role.
  • Collaborate with patient/family and healthcare team regarding progress and plan of care.
  • Present relevant patient information at multidisciplinary meetings for peer feedback.
  • Make appropriate referrals as needed for continuity of care.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Strong interpersonal, analytic, and collaborative skills.
  • Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) acceptable with commitment to obtain a BSN within three years of first day of employment.
  • Additional Emergency Room requirements within one year of hire: ACLS, PALS/ENPC & TNCC;
    Pediatric Emergency: PALS/ENPC & TNCC;
    Non‑Invasive Cardiology: ACLS.
  • Preferred credentials:
    Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS), Emergency Communications Registered Nurse, Certified Pediatric Nurse, Certified Emergency Nurse.
Preferred
  • Experience in a specific clinical area.
Sign‑On Bonus Eligibility

Internal employees and rehires who left Northwestern Medicine within one year are not eligible for the sign‑on bonus. Exception: new‑graduate internal employees seeking their first licensed clinical position may be eligible depending on the job family. External candidates must have one or more years of RN experience to qualify for the sign‑on bonus.

Background Check

Northwestern Medicine conducts a background check that includes criminal history on newly hired team members and, at times, internal transfers. If you are offered a position, you will be required to complete an authorization and disclosure form allowing the company to run the background check. Results are evaluated on a case‑by‑case basis, and all local, state, and federal laws, including the Illinois Health Care Worker Background Check Act, are followed.
