Job Description

The Staff Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities
  • Assess and record patient status; identify patient care needs upon admission or point of care entry.
  • Organize assessment health data to ensure it is accurate, complete, and accessible.
  • Identify problems requiring immediate attention.
  • Validate diagnoses with patient/family and health‑care team members.
  • Document diagnoses in a manner that facilitates expected outcomes and plan of care.
  • Initiate a problem list at admission and update as needed; incorporate age‑specific care principles into the patient’s plan of care.
  • Document that the patient’s individualized plan of care has been discussed with and agreed upon by the patient/family.
  • Begin discharge plans at admission; consult with patient/family and health‑care team regarding discharge plan.
  • Identify patient teaching needs on admission and throughout hospital stay.
  • Arrange conferences with patient and/or family and other health‑team members when indicated to plan care.
  • Prioritize and organize nursing interventions that are evidence‑based and reflect established standards of care.
  • Provide individualized, mutually agreed patient/family education founded on evidence‑based practice and research guidelines.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and patient responses.
  • Review patient’s health data consistently to keep the Plan of Care updated.
  • Ensure revisions to the plan of care are systematic, ongoing, and driven by measurable, realistic goals.
  • Document the patient’s progression toward identified outcomes.
  • Identify unmet outcomes and provide direction for continuity of care.
  • Reassess nursing actions for effectiveness in achieving desired outcomes.
  • Communicate with patient/family and health‑care team regarding patient care and the nurse’s role.
  • Collaborate with patient/family and health‑care team regarding patient progress and plan of care.
  • Present relevant patient information at multidisciplinary meetings and conferences for peer feedback.
  • Make appropriate referrals as needed for continuity of care.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) acceptable if committed to obtaining a BSN from an accredited program within three years of first day of employment.
  • Current State of Illinois Registered Professional Nurse license.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and analytic skills.
  • Additional requirements:

    Emergency Room – ACLS, PALS/ENPC & TNCC within one year of hire; Pediatric Emergency Department – Pediatric Advanced Life Support, TNCC within one year of hire; Non‑Invasive Cardiology – ACLS preferred.
  • Preferred:
    Trauma Nurse Specialist, Emergency Communications, Registered Nurse Certified Pediatric Nurse, Certified Emergency Nurse, and experience in specific clinical areas.
