Duties- Assist the Technical Director of the Fine and Performing Arts Center (FPAC) and team in preparing FPAC facilities and executing academic performing arts events.
- Serve as chief carpenter for academic theater productions and assist with all FPAC events as assigned.
- Train and supervise shop technical staff on set construction, load‑in/out, and shop safety guidelines and procedures.
- Conduct OSHA safety checks for all technical spaces on a regular basis and collaborate with Academic Theater and Music Directors.
- Supervise setup, operation, and technical requirements for academic music rehearsals, performances, recitals, and juries.
- Assist with technical advancements for Academic Theater and Music performances.
- Manage, build, and assemble scenic elements for each academic theater production; transport, load‑in, and strike scenic elements.
- Assist with rigging hung elements to safety standards and install and focus lighting, sound, and video elements as needed.
- Plan, schedule, and train technical shop crew on academic theater set construction, load‑in/out, and safety guidelines.
- Maintain inventory of shop supplies and power tools, and inform the Technical Director of needed supplies.
- Oversee maintenance and repair of technical equipment and maintain backstage storage areas.
- Communicate with the Liberal Arts Office and Academic Theater department on budget for each theater production.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Background in theater, evidenced by coursework and/or related experience.
- At least 2 years of experience in set construction in a producing theatrical venue or scenic studio.
- Basic understanding of theatrical lighting, electrical, sound setup, ability to read a stage plot, and theater rigging.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency with software programs used in the field.
- Willingness to adapt to a flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends.
- Ability to lift heavy objects up to 75 pounds and work on a lift or ladder up to 25 feet high.
- Comfortable stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling as required.
- Close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Comfortable working in all types of environments, including exposure to chemicals.
