Supervisor of Roads and Grounds – Inside Higher Ed (All Sites)
Job OverviewThe Supervisor of Roads and Grounds serves as the head landscaper and supervisory lead for Grounds and Vehicle Maintenance personnel under the direction of the Director of Campus Operations. Responsibilities include coordinating campus landscaping, parking area upkeep, secondary roads, walkways, traffic control signs, athletic field maintenance, snow removal, trash and rubbish removal, vehicle maintenance, and fostering a learning environment that promotes student success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Lead and assist Grounds crew in providing attractive and clean campus grounds, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment.
- Schedule, assign, and supervise Grounds and Vehicle Maintenance personnel for landscaping, pruning, vegetation control, plantings, walkway, secondary road, and athletic field maintenance, trash removal, snow removal, and vehicle upkeep.
- Plan and manage athletic field maintenance within budgetary limits for game, practice, softball, baseball, and tennis courts.
- Establish work schedules and inspect completed work to ensure conformance to specifications and standards.
- Develop campus ornamental landscape plans in collaboration with the Director of Campus Operations and oversee their maintenance, replacement, and new plantings.
- Inspect campus for unsafe conditions, take corrective action, and report safety hazards.
- Maintain inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment; liaise with vendors regarding product specifications and new products.
- Operate campus vehicles and equipment as necessary to complete projects.
- Train employees on equipment use and enforce work and safety regulations.
- Assist in accident investigations and prepare reports.
- Coordinate contractors on Roads & Grounds projects and assist with solicitation of project quotes.
- Perform additional supervisory responsibilities as assigned.
- Associate’s degree in horticulture, landscape architecture, or related field, or equivalent of 10 years experience in grounds/nursery including lawn maintenance chemicals and equipment.
- Three or more years supervisory experience, preferably grounds-related.
- Current Illinois Pesticide License (applicator‑turf) and valid driver’s license for light and medium trucks.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
Ability to lead and assist Grounds crew, schedule and supervise personnel, plan and manage athletic fields, inspect and enforce safety standards, maintain inventory, and coordinate contractors. Must be able to perform manual tasks such as standing, walking, reaching, stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds, and possess close vision.
Position Status and HoursFull Time – General Hours Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm; on‑call 24/7 as needed.
Salary and BenefitsHourly rate: $26.30–$30.00 per hour.
