The Excavator Operator is a skilled equipment operator responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators or backhoes on utility construction and pipeline infrastructure projects. This position plays a critical role in the successful completion of water, gas, and wastewater systems throughout the Texas Panhandle and surrounding region. The Excavator Operator is expected to work with precision, take ownership of their machine, and represent Curtis’s commitment to quality and safety on every job site.
Key Responsibilities- Operate excavators of various sizes for trenching, excavation, pipe bedding, backfill, and grading operations on utility and pipeline projects.
- Dig to specified line and grade per project plans, ensuring precise slope and elevation control for gravity-fed systems (water, wastewater, storm drain).
- Work safely around underground utilities, adhering to excavation safety protocols, shoring/sloping requirements, and OSHA Subpart P standards.
- Perform daily pre-shift and post-shift equipment inspections; document findings on Daily Equipment Inspection Reports and report deficiencies to the supervisor.
- Maintain the machine in clean, functional condition — perform basic greasing, fluid checks, and minor upkeep as needed.
- Adhere to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific safety plans at all times.
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of verifiable experience operating an excavator on construction projects.
- Demonstrated ability to dig to grade, read a grade rod, and work with a grade checker or laser.
- Working knowledge of excavation safety, trench shoring, and soil classification.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
- Willingness to travel.
- Experience on water/wastewater utility construction or pipeline projects.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) — Class A or
B. - Experience reading construction plans and utility drawings.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction certification.
- Competent Person training in excavation safety (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P).
- Ability to operate equipment for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat typical of West Texas summers.
- Must be able to climb in/out of equipment, perform daily walkarounds, and conduct hands‑on inspections.
- Occasional heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) for equipment maintenance tasks.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments with exposure to dust, noise, and rough terrain.
- Competitive hourly wage based upon experience.
- Per diem and travel pay for out-of-area project work.
