Equipment Operator – Pampa, TX

This Equipment Operator position is located in the Pampa Maintenance Section of the Amarillo District, responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment to perform complex transportation maintenance work. The role emphasizes safety, reliability, and a strong commitment to community service.

Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment such as tractor‑trailer haul truck, motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine, and dump truck.
  • Operate light equipment including front‑end loader (one and a quarter cubic yards or less), pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment; move and use tools, materials, tires, and attachments as needed.
  • Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, and assist the public during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Assist local law‑enforcement officials at accident sites and help stranded motorists as required.
  • Assist with traffic control by placing and gathering cones, warning signs, barricades, and flagging traffic.
  • Monitor and complete required reports, including time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI checklist, and records of work in progress.
  • Work independently on assignments while referring any unusual issues to the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 1 year experience in maintenance and/or construction equipment operation. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent.) Associated college education or technical training may substitute for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
Licenses & Certifications

Valid driver’s license and a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) for equipment operation at the time of application. Experience driving a state vehicle is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Methods and procedures involving storage and transport of hazardous materials.
  • Some knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance.
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate labor, materials, and equipment; prioritize and organize work assignments.
  • Proficiency in using hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Drive and ride in a vehicle for extended periods.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; no temperature protection.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat; below 32°F or above 100°F for longer than one hour.
  • Required to wear protective gear—respirator, hard hat, or other devices.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Perform light work: lift up to 20 lbs at a time; frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Perform medium work: lift up to 50 lbs at a time; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Work is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment and be subject to random drug testing. Medical marijuana is not accepted as a valid medical explanation for a positive test.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24‑hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
