Summary
Transportation Security Officers provide security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner, including assisting with high‑profile events and ensuring safe operation of transport systems.
Responsibilities- Operate screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers.
- Perform searches and screenings, including physical interaction with passengers (pat‑downs, property searches, bag searches, lifting and carrying items up to 50 lbs).
- Control terminal entry and exit points.
- Interact with the public, give directions, and respond to inquiries.
- Maintain focus and awareness in a stressful environment, including alarms, machinery noise, crowd distractions, and time pressure.
- Make effective decisions in both crisis and routine situations by applying risk‑based security screening protocols.
- Retain knowledge of all applicable SOPs and adapt to new information or obstacles.
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. National status.
- Minimum age of 18 at the time of application.
- Selective Service registration required.
- Pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation, and background investigation.
- Subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
- Must be available to work various shifts, including overtime, as needed.
- Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking, comprehending).
- Must be available for mandatory travel for training and occasional travel.
- Can handle exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals.
- For SV‑D pay band, meet one of the following:
- At least one year of full‑time experience in security, aviation screening, or as an X‑ray technician.
- High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or TASC certificate.
- Maintain agility to squat and bend.
- Lift and manipulate baggage and containers weighing up to 50 lbs repeatedly.
- Walk up to three miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours).
Full‑time positions require 40 hours per week and may include irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended shifts, and split shifts. Part‑time positions range from 16–32 hours per week with similar scheduling flexibility.
