Minimum Biweekly Rate of Pay: $1,751.77. (If the appointment is an internal promotion, the position will be filled at the minimum of the pay grade or up to 5% of the employee’s current rate, whichever is higher.)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This highly responsible position requires the employee to perform all assigned duties with optimal responsibility, demonstrate leadership by serving as a positive role model for staff, youth, and the community, and treat all persons with dignity and respect.

The employee must adhere to agency or facility policies and procedures, maintain a safe and secure environment for youth and staff, and enforce a “zero tolerance” policy for escapes, abuse, sexual harassment, and inappropriate conduct by staff. They assist in the operation of the secure detention center, ensuring the safe custody of all detained youth while safeguarding their constitutional rights, especially concerning legal, medical, and mental health issues.

Responsibilities include ensuring compliance of youth services and programming with court orders, rules, departmental policies, and quality assurance standards; training employees on duty; supervising youth activities; controlling detained youth through directives, counseling, and appropriate protective actions; inspecting the facility, visitors, and packages for contraband; and assuming acting supervisor duties when the supervisor is absent.

The role requires maintaining accurate documentation of incidents, youth movements, violations, and court preparation; using security and emergency equipment; performing regular checks on confined or suicidal youth; analyzing information via the Juvenile Justice Information System; initiating and maintaining youth counts; and attending all required training, including CPR, AED, and first aid when necessary.

Maintaining a valid driver’s license and reporting any changes within 72 hours is required, along with compliance with Florida Statute 215.422 and Prompt Payment Compliance Law. The employee may be required to perform additional duties as needed.

  • Knowledge of housekeeping tasks related to facility sanitation
SPECIAL NOTES

All prospective candidates will undergo sex offender checks, criminal background checks (state, local, national) and a pre-employment drug screening for direct care positions. Valid driver’s license requirements apply for transportation duties. Successful candidates must be certified in accordance with the State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice direct care training policy or obtain such certification within 180 days of employment.

Those not currently in the DJJ system as a direct care worker must take and pass Ergometric’s IMPACT Assessment and Training Test within six months of initial testing. The Florida Administrative Code allows staffing to reflect the gender ratio of the juvenile population.

Applicants must be at least 19 years old, a high school graduate or equivalent, have no felony convictions or felony‑related misdemeanors after September 30, 1999, and comply with fingerprinting and background investigation requirements. An affidavit-of-application confirming compliance must be submitted under oath.
