Job Summary

Reports to deputy warden, operations. Responsible for the facility fire and safety program in compliance with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, Management & Training Corporation (MTC), and Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) directives.

Essential Functions
  • Manage programs and conduct monthly inspections of all areas of the facility to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, ACA standards, and the Environmental Health and Safety Manual.
  • Develop and maintain accurate files and records for the facility relating to all aspects of the agency safety, environmental health, risk management, workers' compensation, and ACA accreditation program.
  • Prepare evaluative reports, recommend improvements and modifications to resolve problems and deficiencies, and prepare responses to requests for information related to unit operations and activities.
  • Ensure adequate fire protection services are provided and available to the facility.
  • Perform fire inspections and testing of equipment on a frequent scheduled basis at various times or different shifts.
  • Arrange annual inspections by local or state fire officials or other qualified person or entity.
  • Ensure availability of fire hoses or extinguishers at appropriate locations throughout the facility.
  • Establish, manage and monitor safety training programs for facility staff members and offenders on the facility.
  • Develop and maintain a system for review of and compliance with safety and fire prevention standards and training.
  • Assist administration during situations that pose an imminent threat of death or serious injury; assist in implementing appropriate corrective action; and prepare reports and maintain contact with other departments and staff.
  • Monitor the control, use, maintenance, and storage of hazardous materials and chemicals, safety equipment, and devices; and monitor environmental factors, operating procedures, safety procedures, contamination, and pollution.
  • Conduct investigations involving inmate and employee accidents, incidents, near misses, reported hazards, vehicle accidents, fires, lightning and other weather damage and other conditions and situations that could affect the health, safety and welfare of employees and inmates, communicate such information to the warden in a timely manner, and make recommendations for prevention when necessary.
  • Monitor the facility grounds to ensure compliance with OSHA rules and regulations, as well as state and local safety laws.
  • Educate and monitor employee and inmate workers to utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) consistent with the requirements in the Environmental Health and Safety Manual and applicable Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one (1) year experience in risk management or a related field (e.g., loss control, workers’ compensation, occupational safety or industrial hygiene). Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Post Hire Requirements

Must attain and maintain appropriate facility security clearance. Must successfully complete annual in‑service training requirements.
