Overview
The Air Force Civil Engineer Center is offering an undergraduate internship in Panama City, Florida. As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers utilizing digital technologies, AI tools, and software to develop a repository of digitized instruction manuals for instrumentation to serve the operation of the Air Force Civil Engineer RDT&E laboratories (AFCEC/CXAE).
Responsibilities- Develop foundational knowledge of analytical instrumentation used across STEM disciplines, including mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, liquid and gas chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, calorimetry, dynamic light scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, ion chromatography, elemental analysis, and goniometry/drop shape analysis.
- Gain hands‑on experience in Python programming, including exposure to natural language processing and introductory machine learning concepts.
- Learn to apply AI‑assisted tools to organize, catalogue, and enhance the searchability of a technical repository.
- Strengthen critical thinking and technical communication skills.

Start DateExact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
Appointment LengthThis appointment is a two‑month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

The qualified candidate is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in an eligible STEM discipline.
