Job Summary

We are looking for experienced Ground Maintenance/General Laborers to perform site maintenance tasks such as using hand tools and operating small engine-powered equipment to perform routine manual laboring tasks, ground maintenance activities, site custodial projects, composting and other duties as assigned. Positions are assigned a variety of unskilled and manual laboring tasks in maintaining and ensuring the County landfill is safely operable.

Routine and repetitious work may be assigned so that continuous supervision is not necessary.

Responsibilities

Performs unskilled and manual labor tasks including, but not limited to, installing and repairing guardrails and fencing, traffic painting, traffic layout, tree trimming, weed abatement and asphalt/concrete work within landfills.

Assists in placement, removal and repair of landfill alternative daily cover tarps.

Works as a flagman in areas where equipment and personnel may obstruct traffic flow; installs traffic signs and safety devices.

Installs and disassembles corrugated metal drainage pipes or other prefabricated drainage control components; installs erosion control devices.

Mixes and pours concrete for small projects.

In a training capacity, assists in and learns the operation of light construction equipment such as compacted track loader, skid‑steer and integrated tool carrier.

Removes litter and debris from drainage structures; performs routine janitorial duties.

Paints buildings, pipes and other structures.

Washes and fuels light duty vehicles.

Performs weekly, biweekly and monthly inspections of light duty vehicles, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, ladders and other equipment and tools.

Performs traffic control tasks; places traffic control devices during lane closures as described in the Work.

Assists Landfill Maintenance Workers while performing skilled projects.

Performs composting materials handling activities.

Responsibilities of a Maintenance Person

Performing manual laboring tasks; using tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
Reading signs, labels, work schedules and simple instructions in English
Speaking and understanding English sufficiently to communicate clearly and comprehend information provided in meetings and trainings
Understanding and following written and oral instructions
Writing simple messages in English
Counting, adding and subtracting numbers
Working with others as a team and following instructions at all times

Ability to

Walk up or down uneven terrain or irregular surfaces
Operate power tools such as power drill and power saw, pneumatic tools.
