SummaryThis position involves general labor duties on a rail yard crew, including shoveling, sweeping, operating hand tools and heavy equipment, and moving materials as directed. Experience in the rail or aggregate industries is helpful. With company-provided training and work experience, the Rail Crew Laborer seeks certification as a full-charge Rail Specialist, qualified to assist in train movements within CYD’s rail yards.
During orientation, the Rail Crew Laborer will apply for the CNYX Rail Conductor Program. The trainee must meet company and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards for physical requirements, motor vehicle record, and background/safety record. Upon completion, promotion to Rail Specialist and eligibility for the CNYX Locomotive Engineer Training Program may follow.
- Ensure health and safety standards are met by complying with legislation and company policies and promoting a safe work environment.
- Perform assigned tasks safely and efficiently.
- Operate basic equipment as instructed.
- Follow instructions and work team‑oriented.
- Regularly attend work.

Education and/or Experience- High school diploma or GED preferred; related experience is a plus.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instruction.
- Basic math proficiency.
- Valid driver’s license required; must meet FRA and company standards.
- Loader experience preferred.
- Computer experience preferred.
The physical demands include regular walking, talking, hearing, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, reaching, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, bending, twisting, climbing, and balancing. Occasional sitting, kneeling, and crouching also required. The employee must climb a ladder up to 30 feet and lift or move items up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
WorkEnvironment
Employees may be exposed to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, outside weather, extreme cold or heat, and moderate noise levels. Shift differential may apply.
