Overview
GENERAL
PURPOSE:
Assists veterans and dependents in obtaining federal, state, and local benefits by providing comprehensive guidance, advocacy, and case management services. With regular attendance, this position serves as a liaison between veterans and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, state agencies, and community organizations. Occasionally supports the Human Services office with veteran’s state aid applications, assessments, and data entry.
- Verify information provided by applicants (e.g., federal records, housing, birth records, and other applicable documents).
- Communicate required processes and procedures used for determining benefit qualifications and eligibility; issue flag holders to Sarpy County veterans.
- Request required documents from veterans and dependents to establish eligibility for veterans’ services (e.g., DD form 214, birth records, marriage records, and other applicable documents).
- Assist the applicant with application(s) to county, state, and federal repositories.
- Serve as a source of information and referral to individuals concerning veterans’ services and maintain a working knowledge of companion programs to veterans’ services (e.g., Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, DHHS).
- Process completed applications, forms, and reports.
- Assist in filing appeals or other actions for denied claims or applications.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- 3 years of experience in an administrative or clerical role.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain necessary accreditations and a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Card from the Department of Veterans Affairs within 1 year of employment.
- Must provide DD-214 with application showing honorable discharge.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with diverse individuals.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
- Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite and other software related to data management, communication, and other common business processes.
- Ability to follow established policies and procedures for confidentiality while adapting to evolving privacy standards and technologies.
- Ability to build and maintain positive relationships within a team.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and programs related to veterans’ benefits and services.
- Skilled in interviewing and assessing veterans to determine eligibility for benefits and available services.
- Knowledge of military structure, terminology, and discharge documentation.
The work environment is typically a professional office setting, involving regular use of computers, standard office equipment, and frequent interaction with both internal staff and the public in a structured, task-oriented atmosphere.
