The Lower Loup Natural Resources District is proud to be a vital part of Nebraska’s network of 23 Natural Resources Districts (NRDs). These NRDs are strategically organized along hydrological boundaries, allowing them to address a wide array of natural resource challenges in a localized and effective manner. Our District, like its counterparts, holds the essential responsibility of safeguarding and nurturing our natural resources.

This includes a broad spectrum of areas, such as water quality and quantity, forestry, range management, soil conservation, and much more.

Intern Responsibilities

Approximately 75% of the time will be spent water sampling wells for nitrate analysis, including independently approaching landowners, farm operators and commercial entities within the NRD, utilizing GPS, researching sampling sites and entering data on the web after a training period. The balance of the time will include measuring irrigation water, evaluating irrigation systems, installing and maintaining remote soil moisture sensors, probing soil for moisture, observing crops for maturity and nitrogen adequacy, sampling soil up to 30’ deep with hand and powered probes, troubleshooting web applications and mapping crops and manure on GIS systems.

Qualifications/Requirements

Seeking a degree in Agronomy, Natural Resources, GIS, Agricultural Engineering or other environmental sciences and experience in agriculture. Need good communication skills. A driver’s license is required.

Internship Benefits

The internship is challenging considering the wide range of jobs, the complexity of data, measurement processes, weather, biological processes and the need to make decisions independently on the go. Upon successful completion of the internship the candidate will gain confidence and experience to continue working in the environmental field and will be considered for full‑time employment.

Application Process

Please submit a resume with references to Tylr Naprstek, Assistant General Manager, by email to tnaprstek.
