Purpose of Position

Perform professional law enforcement duties on an assigned shift, ensuring the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws to protect life and property, and maintain law and order throughout the community.

Essential Functions
  • Patrol assigned area, by vehicle, foot or bicycle, to prevent/detect violations; enforce traffic and parking regulations, conduct traffic stops, inspect licenses and registrations, operate radar.
  • Administer roadside sobriety tests, arrest intoxicated drivers and complete chemical analysis requests for DUI cases.
  • Respond to emergency calls, assist as needed, provide backup on crimes in progress, secure safety of officers.
  • Arrest individuals suspected of criminal activity, issue citations and warnings.
  • Investigate criminal activity, isolate and secure crime scenes, gather and safeguard evidence, ensure duties performed per procedures.
  • Conduct case follow‑up activities to determine logical conclusions and/or appropriate resolutions.
  • Perform interviews and interrogations to obtain case‑related information, determine probable cause, identify suspects; transport arrestees and citizens as needed.
  • Investigate accident scenes, determine cause, safeguard scene, create accident diagrams/sketches, annotate for reference.
  • Administer first aid to injured persons and request medical attention when needed.
  • Interview citizens regarding complaints to gather information on emergencies or offenses.
  • Determine probable cause for arrest or search; prepare affidavits and serve warrants.
  • Assist persons who may be lost, stranded or in need of assistance.
  • Establish police lines at fire/crime scenes, initiate vehicular and crowd control, direct traffic and disperse unruly gatherings.
  • Obtain evidence, assist in preparing cases to file charges, appear in court to present evidence and testify.
  • Enforce city ordinances, resolutions, and public health and safety regulations.
  • Attend departmental roll‑call meetings; confer with supervisor on daily tactical matters, case progress.
  • Attend professional seminars and conferences to stay updated on laws, procedures, techniques, and skills.
  • Participate in law enforcement activities with other agencies, provide mutual assistance.
  • Complete detailed and accurate reports and official records documenting activities; use computer programs for records.
  • Operate and maintain assigned departmental vehicles and equipment per procedures.
  • Engage with schools and community groups to promote crime prevention, participate in community relations, interact with neighborhood watch.
  • Answer inquiries from the public; receive complaints, manage the situation or refer individuals appropriately.
  • Operate standard office equipment and other equipment used in police program (copier, fax, computer, calculator, communication equipment, cameras, radar).
  • Establish and maintain positive relations with public, colleagues, other agencies and municipal officials.
Essential Knowledge, Experience and Ability
  • Maintain regular and dependable attendance during prolonged periods, including short notice call‑outs.
  • Learn and apply departmental operating procedures, policies, regulations.
  • Apply knowledge of law enforcement principles and techniques.
  • Apply knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and ordinances.
  • Apply knowledge of city geography.
  • Apply first aid principles to deliver emergency medical aid.
  • Learn City responsibilities and use independent judgment.
  • Perform input/retrieval functions using computer programs relevant to duties.
  • Enforce ordinances with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
  • Exercise sound, independent judgment in high‑pressure situations; assess and act effectively.
  • Make complex decisions and develop plans to ensure safe, efficient, lawful completion of tasks.
  • Maintain and operate firearms according to procedures.
  • Operate motor vehicles in all weather and traffic conditions.
  • Learn and use standard office and program equipment per policies.
