School Improvement Specialist
To support the professional growth of administrators, School Improvement Specialists (SIS), and Teachers in the area of ELA by strengthening classroom teachers' understanding of ELA concepts, effective delivery of instruction strategies, and Common Core State Standards.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and
Qualifications:
- Valid Arizona teaching certificate (K-6 or ELA Secondary)
- Master's Degree in English Education or equivalent and three years of teaching experience
- Skilled in ELA instruction and assessment
- Works effectively in small groups and the classroom environment
- Works successfully with diverse populations
- Demonstrates successful collaboration
- Strong ELA intervention experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports school administrators and SIS with the development and implementation of the district's ELA plan
- Provides ongoing coaching to administrators and SIS on effective instruction to students in need of ELA intervention
- Supports school admin team and SIS with the development of training in ELA to all school teachers and principals as needed to help build personal confidence in reading instruction
- Works with the administrative team and SIS with strategies in involving families to improve effectiveness in ELA understanding and use
- Provides on-site support and monitoring for the successful school-wide implementation of the ELA program with on-site emphasis on learning with understanding
- Assists sites in the design of assessments to capture benchmark ELA achievement data and help move students forward in all areas of their ELA instruction
- Works with school administrative teams and SIS to coordinate vertical and horizontal articulation of ELA
- Support school administrative teams in establishing PLCs in the implementation of co-planning, co-teaching, and coaching
- Coach principals and SIS on how to assist administrative and instructional staff in interpreting data and designing approaches to improve student achievement and instruction
- Model how the curriculum is aligned with Common Core State Standards
- Coach school administrators and SIS in how to facilitate teachers' use of successful, research-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners
- Identify the needs, plan, and deliver professional development for new teachers, including New Teacher Instruction and Teacher Mentor Program
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee Tier 3 Interventions after school and summer school
- Other activities as required by Needs Assessment
- Seek and connect support from other institutions
- Seek and attend professional development opportunities internally and externally
Mental Tasks:

- Develops, implements, and evaluates plans
- Collaborates with SIS in coaching for classroom teachers
- Promotes learning and ensures safety
- Performs functions from written and oral instructions and from observing and listening to others
- Evaluates written materials to include written assignments and tests
Physical Tasks:
- Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion is not normally required to perform all aspects of the job
- Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks
- Work involves sitting for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, stooping, bending, and holding and grasping objects
- Visual weakness must not prohibit the performance of assigned duties
- Verbal communicative ability may be required for public contact positions
