Special Education Teacher

The job of Special Education Teacher is done for the purpose of developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Tasks include adapting classroom work, administering first aid, advising parents, assessing students' needs, collaborating with school personnel, directing instructional assistants, instructing students, managing student behavior, preparing teaching materials, reporting incidents, participating in meetings, and performing other related duties.

Knowledge required includes algebra, reading manuals, writing documents, analyzing situations, age appropriate activities, bilingual skills, pertinent codes, stages of child development, and working knowledge of school system.

Skills required include analytical skills, applying assessment instruments, preparing records, promoting child centered environment, record keeping, verbal and written communication skills.

Abilities include scheduling activities, gathering data, problem solving, working with others, utilizing equipment, working with diverse groups, working with data, and utilizing technology.

Responsibilities include working under limited supervision, leading others, operating within a budget, and utilizing resources from other work units.

Physical requirements include frequent sitting, standing, bending, repetitive motion, vision to monitor, lifting up to 15 pounds, significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

Qualifications include a Bachelors degree in job related area, Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate in Special Education, and Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
