Lead Hardware Circuit Design Engineer

Our client, a developer of commercially-viable electric vehicles, is looking for a Lead Hardware Circuit Design Engineer to work on the development of HMI systems and subsystems for prototype and production vehicles. In this position, you'll take ownership of projects through the full development life-cycle. This includes guiding/mentoring other engineers on the team as an "in the trenches" leader.

This company is working on next generation EV technology, standing on firmer ground than its competitors.

Responsibilities of the Lead Hardware Design Engineer
  • Technically lead a group of hardware electronic engineers
  • Support senior leadership in meeting aggressive company goals
  • Lead the documentation, hardware design, implementation and support of automotive products for vehicle applications.
  • Assist in architecting new solutions for future products.
  • Work with other groups to support company initiatives.
  • Design complex high speed digital and analog electronic control boards for vehicle Human Machine Interface systems
  • Design various analog, digital, mixed signal and microprocessor-based boards to meet automotive standards
  • Provide CAD layout guidance in areas such as high-speed gigabit transceivers, high-bandwidth digital (Video, DDR, RGMII, etc.), mixed signal and RF interfaces
  • Collaborate with various internal and external cross functional teams – purchasing, SW/FW/HW/ME Eng., CAD, PMs, suppliers (module, semiconductor, etc.), integrators and CMs.
  • Create test plans and document test results to verify hardware functions as desired
  • Use lab equipment to perform board bring up and debug
  • Perform DFMEA and FIT calculations to ensure designs properly mitigate unacceptable risk
Qualifications of the Lead Hardware Design Engineer
  • BSEE with 8+ years of experience in circuit/board-level hardware design and development
  • 3+ years as a lead or senior engineer, taking ownership of projects through the full development life-cycle
  • Strong background in high-speed hardware design experience with GT/GTR interfaces such as PCIe, USB 3, Gigabit Ethernet, FPD3, GMSL2, HDMI, DP, 3/12G SDI or similar
  • Architecture selection, design, analysis (cost, risk, suitability)
  • Discrete Analog, digital and mixed signal circuit design
  • High speed digital interfaces:
    Video (HDMI, DP, FPDIII, GSML), I2C, RS-422, 485, CAN, Gigabit Ethernet, QSPI, 1 Wire, TWI and similar interfaces
  • Memory architectures such as DDR2/3/4, LPDDR, eMMC, FLASH, QSPI, M.2, SATA and similar
  • Experience RF modules such as BLE, Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC or similar
  • SOMs, SoCs, EBCs, SBCs and other embedded solutions including power domain sequencing (up, down, low power, sleep, hibernate)
  • Able to design circuits capable of passing EMI, EMC and related requirements
  • Proficient in the use of schematic capture tools such as Altium, OrCad, Mentor or similar
  • Working knowledge of design and simulation tools such as PSPice, Matlab or similar tools
  • Proficient in the use of electronic engineering lab equipment
  • Comprehensive, detailed and organized problem solving skills to help debug new hardware designs
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Skills

  • Automotive industry experience
  • Familiarity/experience with HDL language(s) such as VHDL or Verilog
  • Experience designing to a functional safety standard, knowledge of ISO 26262
  • Experience with JIRA or similar project tracking tools
  • Experience designing multicore SOMs, SBCs or EBCs
  • Ability to develop debug code in C, C++, Assembly or other embedded languages
  • Able to develop simple and creative means to debug hardware using Arduino’s, RPi’s, etc.
